MOONSTONE Bar @ Amoy Street, Tanjong Pagar – Unpretentious Indomie in a Hipster Bar Setting

Indonesian comfort food gets a modern upgrade at MOONSTONE Bar, a quaint noodle place cum bar situated along Amoy Street. Helmed by Keith Koh and Anthony Utama, the latter of whom also owns the famous Tamade Cafeteria in Bali, this new entry to Tanjong Pagar’s robust kaleidoscope of food joints and watering holes is where you can expect to find street food staples with a couple of twists.

MOONSTONE’s interior goes against the typical minimalist aesthetic, by employing a mishmash of eclectic memorabilia (think Buddha portraits and plastic dolls) amid floor to ceiling figures painted on the walls.

The indoor seating area is mostly dimmed with the occasional lightbulb dangling from above, save for a few seats by the window that make you feel like you’re dining on display to passersby. Almost like a live mukbang.

The Bakmi Ayam Mason ($10+) serves up a hearty bowl of noodles with braised chicken bits, mushrooms, poached greens, and onsen egg, complete with a couple of wafer-like tofu crisps. A well-balanced bowl, these noodles are a delight to slurp up, with the  coating them in different flavours and textures. Love how runny the onsen egg is, and the tofu crisps which crumble on the first bite! The noodles themselves are chewy and bouncy, with a unique texture that’s not typical of your usual noodles.

True to its name, the Bakmi ‘Szechuan’ ($10+) puts a spicy spin on the street food recipe. With szechuan braised chicken, these noodles yield a pleasant, numbing sensation that’s not too overwhelming on the tastebuds. So spice averse diners, these noods aren’t too far away from your threshold!

For sides, the Dumplings ($4+) are a toothsome side complete with pork, chives, daikon, and kimchi encased in dumpling skin, and ooze with savoury flavour.
