What do Nasu and The Beatles have in common? A themed bakery and cafe called Bakery Cafe Penny Lane! Driving up Nasu Highlands which is known for its forest trails and hilly areas, you would least expect to find a gathering of cottage-like buildings reminiscent of the English countryside.
 

Bakery Cafe Penny Lane Nasu is one of seven sister cafes scattered across Tochigi and Ibaraki, all except a couple similarly themed to re-create the atmosphere of a traditional English teahouse. 

True to its name, Bakery Cafe Penny Lane is themed after the iconic English rock band, The Beatles. Stepping in, you’ll find yourself surrounded by dozens of Beatles-related memorabilia, both for display and for sale. If not for the distinctly Japanese conversations surrounding you, you could easily imagine yourself in an entirely different country here. It’s almost like you’re dining in your Beatles-obsessed aunt or grandmother’s home. 

On the menu is a range of classic English comfort foods with a hint of Japanese influences, such as bread bowl fondue and hamburg steak. All done pretty well I would say. 

It wouldn’t be a bakery cafe if there wasn’t a spot on-ground where you could pick up pastries and sweets to go. Bakery Cafe Penny Lane is also known for its blueberry bread which is sold by the loaf, and features a swirl lined with thick blueberry jam. That aside, the aroma of of fresh-baked goods is too enticing to ignore.  

Bakery Cafe Penny Lane makes a quaint detour if you’re seeking an alternative to traditional Japanese fare, or just want to chill over a quick bite before heading to your abode for the night. Be sure to check out their billboard featuring the iconic Abbey Road, complete with a replica of a Beetle while you’re there!
