Shio & Sato – Shio Pan by Masterchef Singapore Runner-Up with Savoury and Sweet Flavours

Bread has become a beloved breakfast staple in most Singaporean households, and I’m always looking out for new options to add to the table. The latest craze? Shio pan, otherwise known as Japanese salted butter rolls.

Helmed by Masterchef Singapore runner-up and founder of Sourbombe Bakery, Shio & Sato has made a name for itself with its hearty and decadent rolls, which are regularly snapped up at its pop-ups.

Shio & Sato’s secret is in its crisp, buttery shell, which contains a fluffy, chewy middle. Shio pans are best enjoyed fresh for the signature shell, so if you’re planning on having it to go, be sure to pop it in an oven, airfryer, or toaster for 3 minutes.

Its Original ($3.60) is a best-seller, with Truffle ($4.20) and Kombu ($4.20) coming up as equally popular choices in the savoury category. Fancier flavours include substantial fillings like cheese and corn. The Green Chilli Onion ($4.80) combines luscious cream cheese with a generous serving of crunchy green onion.

Asian-inspired offerings include Miso Butter Corn ($4.80) and Kimcheese ($6.90) which pack an umami bomb. The Tamago ($4.80), with its generous stuffing of chopped egg, brings to mind fluffy egg sandos from Japan’s convenience stores. Aside from savoury flavours, Shio & Sato also churns out sweet flavours that are great for afternoon tea!

Shio & Sato has popped up – literally – at various popups around Singapore, with its latest one in the west at Tree Storey in Buona Vista. They still sell out regularly, so head over early to avoid disappointment.
