[CLOSED] Joie by DOZO @ Orchard Central – Vegetarian Fine Dining in the Heart of Town (Invite)

Update 20 Jan 2025: Joie by DOZO has closed.

When you think vegetarian, you think healthy salads and (at times) bland smoothies; the world of fine dining hardly ever comes to mind. Well, here to prove us wrong is Joie by DOZO, a fine dining concept that aims to re-define vegetarianism to experimental, yet refined heights.

Situated on the top level of Orchard Central, Joie is somewhat like a modern day oasis, offering a panoramic view of Orchard Road from its undisturbed premises. Its name takes inspiration from the French phrase, joie de vire, which translates to “exuberant enjoyment of life”. Judging by the evening’s offerings, it’s not hard to see why.

Cafe & Meal MUJI @ Paragon – Japan meets IKEA in Singapore’s First Muji Cafe

It’s like IKEA, but for Asians. After a long wait, Japanese lifestyle chain MUJI has finally opened their first cafe in Paragon, to the delight of both their fans and the Japanese community in Singapore.

Knowing that there would be a huge crowd on its first day, I decided to pop by way after lunchtime, at 3pm – but boy, was I wrong. Queues were snaking outside the cafe’s premises long after I had finished my meal. It could have been due to the weekend crowd, but still.

Grain Traders @ CapitaGreen – Wholesome Rice Bowls in the CBD

I have been to Grain Traders twice and am already planning my next meal there. It’s that good.

Located at CapitaGreen on Market Street, the comfort food joint has been drawing the crowds since its official opening barely a week ago. It is a collaboration between KILO and Papa Palheta, which explains the mix of Western rice and salad bowls and Chye Seng Huat coffee beans.

[CLOSED] Lepark @ People’s Park Complex – Mod-Sin Street Food Pop-Up on a Rooftop Carpark

Update June 2020: Lepark has closed.

There’s a party on the rooftop and you’re all invited.

For a month, LePark (that’s a word play on the Malay term lepak, which means to relax) will be serving up a menu of Mod-Sin street food and craft beers at People’s Park Complex. The pop up(?), which is run by the team behind vegan outfit Afterglow, will also host a variety of music acts throughout its run.

[CLOSED] Wanton @ Amoy Street – Seng’s Noodle Bar with the Bad Boy Vibe

Update 20 Jan 2025: Wanton has closed.

You’ll be forgiven if you didn’t know that Wanton serves that – wanton noodles. Tucked away in a row of shophouses adjacent to Amoy Street Food Centre, this 20-seater noodle concept by Seng’s rocks a modern bar vibe complete with monochrome banner, smooth beats and tattoo-ed guys behind the counter.

At less than five days old, this noodle bar is already drawing large crowds, having frequently chalked up a full house during the lunch hour. Word has it that Chef Benson spent a year training under the legendary Ah Seng himself before he went on to open Wanton.

Ben & Jerry’s Flagship Scoop Shop Opening @ 313 Somerset (Invite)

Fans of Ben & Jerry’s are in for a double treat – with the opening of their new Flagship Scoop Store at 313 Somerset Discovery Walk, one can enjoy no less than 18 exciting ice cream flavours, along with new shakes, sundaes, ice cream cakes and merchandise in the heart of Singapore.

What’s more, with baked goods and herbs being supplied by SCORE Bakery and Edible Garden City, a rehabilitation outlet for inmates and urban farming group respectively, who’s to say you can’t indulge your sweet tooth without doing a little good to society? 😀

On top of that, the Flagship Scoop Store will also host a new Benefit Tuesday Night programme for local welfare organizations to engage the public; the first of which was tonight’s preview of the Peace, Love & Commoonity Sundae, courtesy of international food artist (and my personal favourite food Instagrammer of all time), Samantha Lee.

[CLOSED] I Want My Noodle @ Shaw Centre

Update 20 Jan 2025: I Want My Noodle has closed.

How much are you willing to pay for a bowl of noodles?

Eateries with artisanal or fusion takes on local cuisine have been popping up all over Singapore, giving an atas twist to humble dishes strongly associated with hurried morning and afternooon meals at our neighbourhood hawker centres. One such place is the aptly named I Want My Noodle, which styles itself as a craft noodle shop with contemporary twists on the ubiquitous Chinese noodle.
