Da Dong Prawn Noodles @ Joo Chiat Road, Joo Chiat – Second-Generation Hawkers Serving Prawn Mee with Insane Umami Broth

The old adage, the early bird catches the worm, could not be more true at Da Dong Prawn Noodles, known for its umami prawn noodles that consistently sell out way before its 2pm closing time.

Tucked away in a sleepy corner of Joo Chiat Road, Da Dong Prawn Noodles is a heritage hawker stall that is currently run by second-generation owner Watson Lim, who took over the business from his father in 2018. The stall has been running strong since 1966, when it first opened.

Till today, Da Dong Prawn Noodles never fails to see snaking queues of customers every day, all of them hungry for a taste of their tasty noodles and comforting prawn broth. Prices start from $8 for regular prawn noodles, and $13 for the big prawn version. Expensive for “hawker fare”, yes, but well worth every cent.

The prawn broth, which is prepared as early as 4am daily, is worthy of its legendary reputation. Rich and flavourful, with slight sweetness in the aftertaste, the broth is especially comforting to slurp up. The fact that there are no refills allowed speaks volumes of its tastiness and demand.

That said, there are other components that go into this lip-smackingly good bowl of deliciousness. From the al dente yellow egg noodles to the toothsome prawns and pork pieces and decadent amounts of crispy pork lard, the Prawn Noodles ($5 – $10) are perfect for a hearty breakfast or lunch.  The dry version is great for those who are looking for a bit of heat with their noodles.

The price tag for the Big Prawn Noodles ($13 – $20) might raise a few eyebrows but, having tried them, I can safely say it’s justified. The secret is in the juicy, plump jumbo prawns that pack a generous layer of creamy prawn gonad. The meat practically falls off the shell, and is sweet and tender. Needless to say, the broth further elevates ’em prawns.

Da Dong Prawn Noodles is worth a venture to Joo Chiat, especially if good quality prawn mee is what you crave. And with several other cafes and coffee joints nearby, you can easily pop around the corner for some coffee or dessert if there’s room left in your tummy!
