Wen Kang Ji @ Joo Chiat Road – 2nd Outlet for Famous Wonton Noodles with Melt-In-Your-Mouth Char Siew

Wonton mee is one of those ubiquitous noodle dishes that you can’t really go wrong with, especially if you’re craving something decadent and filling, with just enough meat to top up a bowl of lardy, al dente noodles.

Wen Kang Ji is known for that, just with a touch more decadence as you can see from the XXL Wonton Mee that put it on Singapore’s foodie map. Hot on the success of its original branch at Golden Mile Food Center, a second one has opened up shop on Joo Chiat Road, in the same coffee shop as Da Dong Prawn Noodles

Like its prolific neighbour, Wen Jang Ki sees hordes of customers ordering up their noodles on the regular, with noodles and wonton sold out way before its closing time at 4pm.

Each plate is decadently loaded with springy noodles, which are made using a mix of mee kia and ramen, resulting in an extra firmness when you bite into it. For someone who loves her noodles al dente, this was a clear winner.

I did find the noodles to clump together really fast though, so be sure to dig in quickly – although, the mouthwatering aroma should guarantee that you do. The chilli packs an extra spicy kick, so watch out for that if your spice tolerance is on the low end!

Dumpling Noodle ($5)

The secret to Wen Kang Ji’s deliciousness is in its char siew. The cut used here is pork armpit, which results in the juiciest, most melt-in-your-mouth meat with a buttery layer of fat. Roasted in-house, it is legitimately one of the most delicious cuts of pork I’ve ever eaten. With each layer glistening beautifully, surrounded by the slightly sweet, charred exterior, I almost thought I was biting into rubies.

The dumpling is an almost equal contender on the deliciousness scale, with soft minced meat and shrimp encased by a fairly thick and firm dumpling skin. While some stalls run into the unfortunate problem of slightly stale meat used in their dumplings, I didn’t find this to be the case for Wen Kang Ji. Every bite yielded minced meat that tasted fresh and flavourful.

No wonton or dumpling noodle can be considered complete without – you guessed it, deep-fried lard. Wen Kang Ji is unabashedly generous with its servings of this sinful, addictive fried lard, and each bite-sized chunk is crunchy and laden with flavour.
