Fancy breakfast in Bangkok with a side of history? Then look no further than On Lok Yun, a treasured cafe that has stood the test of time. Opened in 1933, it is known for its Thai-style American breakfasts served in a pre-World War II shophouse on Chareon Krung Road.
Here, you can enjoy an array of Western dishes in a rustic setting where time has stood still – save for the staff bustling to serve their clientele. The menu is straightforward, with classic Western breakfast items ranging between 30 – 100 baht.

If you’re wondering where On Lok Yun’s Thai influences come in, it’s in the details – literally. The most popular (and priciest) breakfast item, 1 Egg with 4 Toppings (100 baht) consists of your choice of fried or scrambled eggs with the usual suspects – bacon, ham, chicken sausages, and get this – Chinese sausages. The last one adds a distinct sweetness and smokiness to this simple breakfast.
Quick tip: try their secret sauce of ketchup, chilli sauce, and dark vinegar for an added kick. You can even concoct your own sauce to your liking using the sauce bottles that are stationed at every table – another mark of Asian eateries!

Singaporean and Malaysian tourists will recognise this one – Kaya Toast (38 baht). Here at On Look Yun, this quintessentially Asian breakfast condiment is more coconut-forward but not too thick, and goes really well with the pillowy soft, plain white bread. For 45 baht, you can get a small tub to go (that’s good for 3 days).

I’ve had On Lok Yun on my radar for a while now, and I’m glad I was able to try it during my first-ever trip to Bangkok. It’s also situated a short ride from The Grand Palace, so have your fill of local Western breakfast before heading over.
