When in Bangkok: Phed Mark @ Sukhumvit Road – Pad Kaprao Eatery by Celebrity Food Blogger Mark Weins

If the name Phed Mark rings a bell for you, that’s because this street food eatery is owned by Mark Wiens, a well-known food vlogger who has coincidentally covered much of Bangkok’s food scene on his channel.

Opened with a group of friends and fellow foodies, including Iron Chef Champion, Chef Gigg, Phed Mark specialises in pad krapow, one of Thailand’s most recognisable street foods.

The eatery itself is compact and situated a one-minute walk from Ekkamai BTS Station on Sukhumvit Road. It’s easily identifiable from its bright yellow and red colours, complete with its flame-shaped mascot. Come for an early lunch to avoid the snaking queue.

While pad kaprao is most known for its ground pork version, Phed Mark has cooked up a total of eight toppings, including vegetarian, squid, and wagyu shank. Prices range from 119 to 269 baht, and you can choose from five levels of spiciness.

Being one for tradition, I went for Pad Kaprao Pork (129 baht) with level three spiciness (less spicy). Halfway through, my tastebuds were in for a whooping despite reading that Phed Mark has tamer spice levels for Bangkok street food. Your mileage might vary. Luckily, Phed Mark is air-conditioned, so no worries about braving the spice and Bangkok’s unforgiving heat.

The dish itself is noticeably dry, likely to accommodate foreign tastebuds. There’s a good balance of rice and meat toppings, and the fried duck egg takes the dish to the next level with its rich, creamy yolk. Highly recommended to top up another egg!

While celebrity chef spots are a dime a dozen, it’s not every day you get to dine at a place opened by your favourite content creator. I recommend giving Phed Mark a try if you’re looking for a fuss-free lunch before starting your day!
