Western cuisine may be a common fixture at hawker centers, but what about Taiwanese-style western cuisine? Kiang Kiang Taiwan Teppanyaki is a not-so-new stall specialising in Western hotplates prepared to order and other traditional Taiwanese fried items and snacks.

Kiang Kiang is tucked deep in the heartlands on the west side of Singapore – a ten to fifteen minutes walk from Marsiling MRT station to be exact. The stall is helmed by ex-Singapore Airlines stewardess Cherry and her husband, Duncan, who got his culinary chops as a hotel chef in Taiwan.
(It was Cherry’s tongue-in-cheek TikTok videos about hawker life that caught my attention, so kudos for consistently marketing her business on top of staying open seven days a week!)

Following its launch a little over half a year ago, Kiang Kiang’s menu has since expanded to six types of meat and seafood, including Asutralian ribeye, pork collar chop, lamb shoulder chop, Taiwanese fried chicken, halibut, and the quintessential Asian-style Western protein – chicken chop. Customers can choose between short grain rice and pasta for their carbs, with corn or beansprouts added.
While prices are on the high side for a hawker stall, Kiang Kiang makes up for it with more than generous servings. The Chicken Chop Set ($8.50) dishes up one helluva juicy, well-marinated chicken chop, with every bite bursting with flavour. No surprises for this being one of Kiang Kiang’s more popular meats. I also like how the hotplates are heated over a fire before serving, so the cooking process continues even after you’ve collected it.
The pasta is well-cooked and the sunny-side-up egg adds to the vibrance of the dish. As for the sauce, choose from mushroom (which features real mushroom chunks!), black pepper, and black pepper and mushroom which is Kiang Kiang’s signature. The sauce is sweeter than what most local palates are used to, with the pasta tasting closer to a tomato-based one.

Kiang Kiang also recently introduced the Taiwanese Egg Roll ($3.80 for Original, $6 for Bacon and Corn or Pork Floss and Cheese) to its breakfast menu; it ended up popular enough to be made available all day. This toothsome Taiwanese snack is crisp and filling, perfect as a shared side or as a midday snack. Also cooked to order, it stayed hot and fluffy throughout my meal.

It’s commendable that younger hawkerpreneurs are entering the scene with more uncommon offerings that locals can enjoy. If you’re craving a taste of Taiwan and happen to be in the area, look no further than Kiang Kiang Taiwan Teppanyaki, which has already earned praise from Taiwanese customers.
