Tucked away in the northern part of Singapore, amongst a row of no-frills eateries and snack shops, Beth welcomes diners like an Italian nonna welcomes her beloved family. And that’s what co-founders (and couple!) Amanda Chia and Alex Ng hope to do at their cozy, European-themed cafe on Casuarina Road.

Fans of culinary competitions on TV may recognise Amanda from MasterChef Singapore and King of Culinary. Here, she is the face of Beth, jovially greeting every customer who walks through the door.
The cafe is chic yet cozy, seating around 55 diners at a time. With communal and bar seating available, it’s easy to find a spot and bask in the warm and attentive service. With a steady flow of customers on a weekday afternoon, one can only imagine how busy it gets during the weekend.

The menu at Beth is akin to a nonna’s spread, hearty and made with love. Choose from a range of family-style dishes from the all-day menu, or come early and be rewarded with a substantial brunch. Must-tries include Sour Cream Fried Chicken ($24+) and Beth’s Hotcake ($17+), guaranteed to leave you stuffed.
Regulars of Amanda and Alex’s former home-based business, PÁAN, will be pleased to find that hearty Italian sandwiches are on the menu. The Truffle and Beef Carpaccio Sandwich ($23+) is a heavy hitter in both size and flavour, with the truffle aroma greeting you as soon as it graces your table. I thoroughly enjoyed the contrast between the rich fattiness of the beef carpaccio and the fresh cheese, while the focaccia packed a lot of brunch.
Make no mistake, this is not one sandwich you would want to share.

Truffle and Beef Carpaccio Sandwich – Beef carpaccio, stracciatella, truffle oil, arugula, foccacia ($23+)
Desserts are available from 10am onward, and here you will find a mix of baked and cold treats. Why not enjoy the best of both worlds in a Mulberry and Olive Cake ($17)? This solid dessert is the stuff that second stomachs were made for. The mulberry bayleaf sorbet is a palatable respite from the heat, paired wonderfully with the moist citrus olive oil cake.

Beth’s offerings are well worth the price (and journey), and I wish them all the best in thriving in our brutal F&B scene. Do reserve in advance or time your visit strategically to avoid the crowd.
