When in Kyoto: (THISIS)SHIZEN @ ShinPuhKan, Nakagyo Ward – Ice Cream Boutique with Handmade, Floral-Inspired Designs

In Japan, you can never run out of dessert spots, especially those that churn out the most photogenic sweets.  (THISIS)SHIZEN is an ice cream boutique that sells artistic ice cream cones resembling edible floral bouquets.

Located in ShinPuhKan, a botanically themed open-air mall, the boutique is one of the hipper, more modern dessert spots in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto.

Step in and you’ll find a space that is part floral display and part art installation. Workstations are scattered between various plants and other displays, with a huge centerpiece sculpture that also serves as a communal dining area. Perfect for your selfie backdrops if you’re dressed in kimono or yukata.

You can choose from three types of cones under the aptly-named Ice Bouquet menu – seasonal, birthstone, and rose mix. Flavour-wise, don’t expect too much variety; the emphasis at (THISIS)SHIZEN is on aesthetics, after all.

The Ajisai Summer Cone (¥1,750) lived up to its reputation as one of the prettiest cones, with vanilla ice cream topped with strawberry and white bean paste. The edible hydrangeas looked as vibrant and whimsical as the summer season when I visited.

The taste was pretty decent, too, and there was a considerable number of layers before reaching the bottom of the cone. The chilly ice cream and crunchy krispies made a welcome treat in the summer heat.

Watching the staff assemble each cone by hand was an equally captivating process. The cones are quite literally edible artworks.

Other, more traditional, but equally aesthetically pleasing desserts include the Dango and Drink Set (¥880). You can also try their Limited Edition Sake (¥660) or Homemade Lemonade (from ¥650).

(THISIS)SHIZEN is worth a short detour if you’re looking for a treat for your eyes and your taste buds. Enjoy a cone before heading to the nearby Nishiki Market.
