Surviving your first outdoor concert (The Singapore Social Concerts 2013, Day One @ Gardens by the Bay)

Image

Scoring free tickets to The Ultimate Concert Weekend is a lot like winning the lottery; you cast your lot in, half hoping and half fearing at what your luck may bring, and in a bid to eliminate any possibility of disappointment and false hope, you try to distract yourself from your one-off game with fate by going about one mundane task after another. Then out of the blue, you get the call of a lifetime (I say lifetime because you’ve probably spent that long waiting for it): you won!

And the million dollar prize? A pair of free tickets to catch your all-time favourite artistes LIVE at the Starcount Concert 2013, held in conjunction with the world’s very first Social Star Awards at Gardens by the Bay!

Nana’s Green Tea Cafe @ Plaza Singapura

If there’s one thing I love about the Japanese, it’s their ability to take anything that’s quintessentially Western and add their own unique twist to it.

Take Nana’s Green Tea Cafe for example: ever since it opened its doors to matcha lovers ten years ago, it’s been touted as the Starbucks of Japan. And what’s more, word is on the street that Nana’s only uses green tea leaves from Kyoto, the capital of matcha production! Talk about taking quality control to a whole new level.

So when Fiona and I checked out their flagship store at Plaza Singapura on a whim, we certainly had high expectations.

Student Meals @ Watami Japanese Casual Restaurant (Star Vista)

The perks of being a student in Singapore are endless: with bus concessions, special memberships and the like, getting by with our hectic schedules and heavy workload gets a wee bit easier when we have perks like these to look forward to. C:

And the best student perk of all?

STUDENT MEALS! Hey, since we are a nation that’s well known for her rich cuisine and dynamic eating culture, why not? I’d say bring on the grub! 😀

Famished and wanting to escape the post-exam crowd in school, my friends and I headed over to Star Vista after we heard about Watami Japanese Casual Restaurant’s Student Meal, which offers ala carte items from their lunch sets for half the price!

[MOVED] Tamoya Udon Singapore @ Liang Court

Update June 2020: Tamoya Udon’s Liang Court outlet has closed. Look out for them at Plaza Singapura!

Image

Ittadakimasu!

Sink your teeth into the never-ending strands of udon noodles: fat, springy, and done to perfection. Let the aroma of a dozen tempura dishes tantalize you as you take a sip of the savoury beef broth straight from the bowl. Then sit back, relax, and enjoy the smooth beats of the latest J-pop tunes as it emanates throughout the restaurant.

What I’ve just described is not your typical mealtime scene from a typical slice-of-life J-drama, but the oh so yummy dinner that greeted my tummy when I stopped by Tamoya Udon Singapore at Liang Court, a.k.a. the mecca of all things Japanese in Singapore!

Tamoya Udon Singapore is the first and only overseas outlet from Tamoya Udon, a popular eating franchise that originated in Japan’s Kagawa prefecture.

[CLOSED] Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice Eating House

Update June 2020: Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice Eating House has closed.

Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long; four years of living close by to what could possibly be the best duck rice in Singapore and it never occurred to me to check out this humble stall. It wasn’t until I heard that Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice Eating House would be serving its final plate of braised duck rice on 22 June 2013 that I found out that this gem of a stall was about a mere five bus stops away from my Hall in NUS.

Can you believe it? All this time I never knew such good food existed (almost) right outside my doorstep, and here I am, about to graduate and move away from this strategic spot!

But as they say, it’s better late than never, and late though it is, I’m definitely not going to miss out on this chance to try the much talked about Teochew Boneless Duck Rice before it disappears for good.

Calefare For A Day: NUS Ukulele Girl x StarHub Mobile’s Happy Everywhere Movement

There are many ways you spend the weekend – sleeping in, shopping, or catching up with your friends over a good cuppa. And if you’re lucky enough, you get to be a calefare in an upcoming commercial!

It all started some time back when my course mate Yen Lin, aka NUS Ukulele Girl, made waves in Singapore when she boarded a shuttle bus in school and held an impromptu singalong, all in the name of making NUS a happier place.

Who knew that StarHub would soon approach her to star in an ad for their latest Facebook application, Happy Everywhere!

The video’s pretty simple; it’s a re-enactment of her impromptu singalong, so calefare were needed to re-create the lively atmosphere on the shuttle bus. Needless to say, I was pretty excited at this chance so I immediately said yes when Yen Lin asked around.

Pasta in a Jar

If there’s one thing I love about jars, it’s the fact that you can make anything and everything with them; bouquets, lanterns, even classy storage cum display spaces for little knick knacks. Just thinking about these ideas gets me all excited. 😀

And not forgetting the ever-growing food trend: meals in a jar!

I’ve always been inspired by Grin Affair’s style of serving their cakes in cute little jars, but since my culinary skills are not good enough for the baking world (yet), I decided to try something similar with some pasta I’d whipped up.

I’m pretty excited about this meal in a jar deal ‘cos I’ve never done anything like this before! 😀
