From now till 21 October 2018, diners at Mandarin Orchard‘s Japanese inspired international buffet restaurant, Triple Three will get to savour a bountiful feast of the freshest seafood, produce, and more from none other than every seafood lover’s mecca: Hokkaido.

Regulars to Clarke Quay may have noticed the addition of a cozy takeaway kiosk selling puffy looking donuts on Havelock Road. Unlike other Japanese bakeries that have opened to much fanfare in downtown Singapore, Haritts Donuts & Coffee made its Singapore debut in May, in a rather quiet, understated manner – much like its pioneer shop in Tokyo, Japan.
Many have patronised Shokotsu Ten, with its bevy of Japanese F&B concepts since its opening at NEX, but how many have heard of RE&S, the regional food company behind it?
For its 30th anniversary, RE&S has launched a Mentaiko Madness menu at 4 of its restaurants: Ichiban Sushi, Men-ichi Japanese Restaurant, Kabe no Ana, and Tokyo Eater Pop-Up Store. Lovers of this spicy cod roe, can savour a whopping 21 umami packed dishes ranging from ramen to mochi pizza.
So, how much mentaiko can YOU handle?
Each time I travel to Japan, I make it a point to check off a few more items off my foodie list, as well as bring back my favourite snacks to last me till my next trip.
Thanks to globalisation, though, here are some foods, desserts and snacks we can now enjoy without having to fly out from Singapore (or rely on the goodwill of friends and family to buy for us)!
While Harajuku 原宿 is widely considered as one of the ultimate places for teenaged fashionistas to visit, especially on the weekend, the hipster haven is also host to a variety of foodie gems. Whether it’s a sugary treat or a belly busting bowl of ramen, here’s a rough guide of what to check out if you’re feeling anything between peckish to ravenous:

Mention the words “seafood” and “Japan”, and Tsukiji Fish Market 築地市場 comes to mind. Indeed, the world’s biggest wholesale fish and seafood market is host to a gamut of fresh catches, and more importantly – sushi restaurants.
There are a couple of options when it comes to having sushi at this time honoured market. Sushi Dai 寿司大 and Daiwa Sushi 大和寿司 are two massively popular choices, thanks to the dozens of recommendations on TripAdvisor. But if you don’t want to burn the better part of your day queueing for three to four hours minimum, you can also check out Ryu Sushi 竜寿司 – or Ryuzushi as it’s known among the locals.

Unless you’ve been living off the grid (i.e. away from social media), you would probably have seen Hana Restaurant’s famous flying noodles once or twice on your Instagram feed by now. The sister restaurant of the equally talked about Benjamin Browns Bistro & Bakery, also at Forum the Shopping Mall, recently overhauled their menu to beat the ever growing competition in Japanese fusion cuisine.
