Nothing beats the heat better than an ice-cold dessert, and in (perpetually) sunny Singapore, the colder and more refreshing, the better.
As its name suggests, Old Amoy Chendol specializes in the Southeast Asian dessert that is one of many Singaporeans’ go-to local fare whenever they need to escape the heat. Helmed by a model-turned-hawkerpreneur, the stall has since expanded to a few more outposts in Alexandra Village Food Centre, Dunman Food Centre, and Punggol.

Residents of Holland Close, Buona Vista can now savour the taste of Thailand minutes from their doorstep. Kin Hoi, whose name literally translates to “eat cockles” in Thai, is a stall specializing in Thai shellfish and other authentic dishes from the Land of a Thousand Smiles.
Helmed by a couple of former media executives who took a brave plunge into the world of F&B, Kin Hoi is also staffed with Thai cooks and servers, so its fare it as close as you can get to the real deal in the heartlands.
With the rare, but welcome spate of sweater weather these days, comfort food has become the main order of the day. And a bowl of piping hot laksa is at the top of that list.
Mention the words “Singapore” and “laksa”, and the legendary stalls of Katong instantly spring to mind. But if you are seeking something closer towards Singapore’s central district, a humble stall by the name of Sungei Road Laksa is where you can get your fix for a low, low price of $3.
While I may be a cafe-hopper at heart, there are times where I crave nothing more than simple, comfort food between my eggs benedicts and waffles and ice cream. Nestled deep within the heartlands in Upper Serangoon Road, Kovan, is First Street Teochew Fish Soup.

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long; four years of living close by to what could possibly be the best duck rice in Singapore and it never occurred to me to check out this humble stall. It wasn’t until I heard that Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice Eating House would be serving its final plate of braised duck rice on 22 June 2013 that I found out that this gem of a stall was about a mere five bus stops away from my Hall in NUS.
Can you believe it? All this time I never knew such good food existed (almost) right outside my doorstep, and here I am, about to graduate and move away from this strategic spot!
But as they say, it’s better late than never, and late though it is, I’m definitely not going to miss out on this chance to try the much talked about Teochew Boneless Duck Rice before it disappears for good.
