Located at Esplanade Mall in City Hall, Aniplus Cafe is known for its popup cafes themed after popular anime and game titles, notably Genshin Impact and most recently, Attack on Titan. The decor is pretty straightforward, with each table fitted with tabletop covers and a picture frame of the Forger family to make you feel as though you are dining in their cozy abode.

Mains and desserts are priced from $15 – $18, with drinks going for $9++ a pop. If your memory has gone fuzzy since the last episode of season 2 aired, let the accompanying scene card on each dish serve as a reminder.

While Aniplus Cafe’s popup is not the first Spy x Family-themed one in the world (Tokyo-based Chugai Grace Cafe‘s concept debuted in mid-2022), their dishes are pretty on point, both in terms of taste and faithfulness to the source material.

Fans will recognise the Sorry Omurice ($18), an edible replica of Anya’s apology meal to her school nemesis, Damien. The omelet is fluffy and tasty, and the chicken chunks are tender and decently portioned. True to its source material, the word “SORRY” is also emblazoned haphazardly on the omelet. My only complaint was the rice was a tad wet, as though it had been prepared with too much water.

While Yor’s cooking may have gained notoriety among fans for its lethal amounts of…tastelessness, there is none of that to worry about at the Aniplus Cafe popup. Yor’s Homecooked Beef Stew ($18) is one of the tastiest and most comforting creations on the menu, with its homemade beef chunks yielding the consistency and taste of IKEA meatballs. The beef stew is slightly on the watery side, with the potato adding some sustenance to this homely dish.

Anya’s Pink Pasta ($18) is an interesting dish that I did not have any expectations for. It’s meant to serve up all of Anya’s favourite things, including a side of her beloved peanuts as well as the starry-eyed expression that lights up her face ever so often. The pink sauce is actually a creamy mushroom base, complete with ham and cheese slices served over al dente pasta. I quite liked this one, although I can’t imagine how the peanuts would have blended with the rest of the ingredients, taste-wise.

Operation Sandwich ($18) is what I imagine Loid Forger would tuck into as a lone spy. Like the man itself, it is conventional and reliable, with a substantial amount of ingredients that wouldn’t look out of place at a regular sandwich shop. It is on the pricey side considering the ingredients, though.

The drinks and desserts, on the other hand, take inspiration from several elements in the series, such as the Anya Strawberry Milkshake ($9) which uses pink-coloured cream and chocolate triangles to re-create the top of Anya’s head.

As for the desserts, there are a couple of hits and misses. Yor’s Red Velvet Lava Cake ($15) was my favourite out of the three we tried, with its red and brown accents taking after Yor’s sophisticated, yet deadly assassin persona. The red velvet lava cake tasted strangely like strawberry however, with a distinct citrus taste.

Aniplus Cafe definitely did their homework on this one, as almost every dish nailed it in terms of concept and execution. The popup will be here till late-August, with exclusive merchandise on sale from the Animate store in Japan!
