The French American Bakery @ Haji Lane, Bugis – French and American Bakery with Viral Toasted Marshmallow Hot Chocolate

Singaporeans’ propensity towards the latest viral foods never ceases to amaze me, especially when it’s food that’s… not exactly suited to the current weather. The French American Bakery recently achieved virality for its hot chocolate, which has been drawing steady crowds in spite of the intense heat.

Tucked away in Haji Lane near Bugis, The French American Bakery is one of many shophouse kiosks and eateries dotting this bustling, touristy district. Its bluish-green exterior is easily distinguishable from its equally colourful neighbours.

Currently, seating is unavailable, and a maximum of 5 people are allowed inside at any given time, so you’ll spend most of your queue time watching them assemble drinks and restock baked goods at the window.

While The French American Bakery was first known for its hearty pastries and cakes, it’s currently most visited for its Hot Chocolate with Toasted Marshmallow Fluff ($8). 

Each cup is assembled to order, with fresh marshmallow fluff piped and torched on top of housemade hot chocolate. The beverage itself is thick, rich, and velvety, and best shared between a couple of people. Paired with the torched marshmallow which is decadently sweet, it’s an indulgent, yet comforting treat that would be perfect for chilly days.

Don’t forget to check out The French American Bakery’s line of classic – you guessed it, French and American pastries! These sell out quickly too, and it’s difficult to resist the enticing, golden swirls of the gigantic croissants and pain au chocolat. 

While the Financier ($4.60 for 3 pieces) is on the dry side, I love the Mixed Fruit Danish ($6.50) which boasts a pastry base that is crisp on the outside, and fluffy on the inside. The fruits used are also fresh and juicy, with a natural sweetness that complements it.
