Udon Shin, the Tokyo udon shop renowned for its viral carbonara udon, has opened its first international store at Takashimaya Shopping Centre in Orchard after much anticipation.

Much like its Tokyo counterpart, Udon Shin’s Singapore outlet is already drawing hour-long queues for its fresh, handmade noodles and mouthwatering tempura.
Those who have tried the OG will be happy to find that everything has been recreated here, from its distinctive blue-tiled storefront to the menu, which boasts the same beloved udon dishes.

The interior is also modern and expansive, with a few wood-themed elements as a nod to the Tokyo outlet.

Now, to put those high expectations to the test. The noodles in my Carbonara Udon ($24++) are as springy and chewy as I remembered, combined with the creamy raw egg and elevated by the sharp notes of the Parmesan cheese. A cheesy, flavour-filled indulgence well worth every calorie.
As a nod to its Italian inspiration, the carbonara udon is accompanied by thick-cut bacon cooked tempura style. The bacon is meaty and fatty, while the tempura coating adds a nice, crisp finish.

The tempura holds up pretty well, too. I love the Shrimp Tempura ($6++) , which is delicious and succulent. You can add more conventional toppings, such as Pork Chashu ($6++) and Chicken Thigh ($4++), or go all out with the Tempura Moriawase ($29++).

Udon Shin Singapore lives up to the hype with its perfectly replicated dishes and brisk service. It’ll be interesting to see how their next global expansion in Arizona, US goes!
