[CLOSED] The Chop House 2-Course Set Lunch @ VivoCity

Update June 2020: The Chop House has closed.

Like the neighbouring ports, VivoCity plays host to a smorgasbord of cultures, brands and flavours. Just a walk down the promenade will bring you up close with some of the world’s most mouthwatering cuisines – from classic Western flavours by Brotzeit and Jamie’s Italian to explosively tantalising Asian offerings like Crystal Jade and Menya Musahi.

The Chop House is one of them; branded as Singapore’s first self-tap beer gastrobar, it is the brainchild of the team behind Wooloomooloo Steakhouse, another hugely popular joint for meat maestros and closet carnivores. But while this vibrant-hued gastrobar is a regular haunt for lovers of the self-proclaimed “liquid diet” (cue pints of beer on a Friday night), The Chop House has also rolled out a 2-Course Set Lunch for the corporate bound at nearby HarbourFront offices, as well as hungry tourists on weekdays for S$19.90

[CLOSED] Cat Cafe Neko no Niwa @ Boat Quay

Update 20 Jan 2025: Cat Cafe Neko no Niwa has closed.

Image Cake, cats and jazz by the window on a lazy weekend morning; it sounds like a scene straight out of a Korean stationery set. Yet this purr-fect slice of heaven exists amid a stretch of bustling F&B and pub joints along the scenic route of Boat Quay.

The cat cafe concept is no stranger to Asia; hundreds of furry-themed franchises dot Japan and Korea, with even a sheep cafe of bleating, four legged darlings drawing patrons by the dozens.

So does Cat Cafe Neko no Niwa (which is Japanese for ‘cat garden’) live up to its cutesy, cuddly counterparts in the East Asia? There’s only one way to find out. 😉

Krispy Kreme @ Income at Raffles Opening (Invite)

Having bound myself to a desk job for the past eleven months, there’s nothing that I crave more than a sugar rush every day. There’s something about the sweet, sweet taste of a sugary treat that makes it so gratifying amid impending deadlines. 😉

Luckily for office dwellers at Singapore’s Central Business District, Krispy Kreme has opened its second outlet at Income at Raffles, meaning that doughnut-craving customers around Raffles can get their fix any time, whether it’s a quick snack between meetings or an after work binge. As expected, Krispy Kreme’s second store opened to much fan fare, including a public teaser and a couple of social media campaigns that built up to it (more on that later!).

What Went Down on McDonald’s Place’s Last Day (aka Farewell King Albert Park)

Image

This is McDonald’s Place. Or as many like to call it, King Albert Park. Home to the McD’s headquarters, along with a handful of F&B businesses, namely, Spinelli Coffee, Island Creamery, and Cinta Manis. Oh, and not forgetting, a Cold Storage supermarket.

Two weeks ago, though, (16 March, to be precise) this iconic building closed its doors for the last time in lieu of new residential and commercial premises headed its way, prompting many Singaporeans to make their way there in the name of One Last Meal under the country’s most beloved golden arches. That, and snapping a few keepsake photos before the place closed for good.

So here’s my re-telling of what went down on King Albert Park’s last day in pictures! 😀

Hit The Roof with Edible Gardens & Friends @ People’s Park Complex

It doesn’t get any more rustic than this; an urban rooftop garden set in the heart of Chinatown, a place more widely known for its sweet pork and burning joss sticks than a pop up farm. Helmed by a motley crew of DIY and environmental enthusiasts, NONG (which is Chinese for farming) had run its course on the spacious rooftop of People’s Park Complex, and it was time to bid it adieu.

The send-off? A miniature farmer’s market of workshops, hipster wares and – not forgetting – food and drink! Set against a backdrop of architectural mishmash (read: high rise buildings towering over ye olde shophouses), vendors like The Cajung Kings, Ice Cream & Cookie Co. and 28 Hongkong Street were the main crowd drawers, while the smooth beats of Matteblanc permeated the evening atmosphere.

Haven’t had the chance to check them out, so there was no way I was missing out on Hit The Roof. With food and drinks being freshly prepared with each order, the food segment of Hit the Roof seemed like a very casual live kitchen, making more than a few mouths water in anticipation. 😉

Hello Kitty’s Celebration @ City Square Mall (15 – 23 Mar 2014) (Invite)

This character needs no introduction; she’s the world’s most famous kitty, and she’s spun an industry worth gazillions of billions of dollars loved by fans young and old alike. That’s right, I’m talking about Hello Kitty, the mouthless feline star who has taken over City Square Mall with the latest Hello Kitty Celebrations (more on that later).

Young ones and grownups who are young at heart are in for a treat this March school holiday. Spend a minimum of $50 and get your paws on a Meet & Greet Pass to take a picture with Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel (see below!). In addition, every $50 spent gets you and three family members a potential golden ticket to a 7D6N trip to Japan, with a visit to Sanrio Puroland, the mecca of all things kawaii (limited to 20 entries per shopper per day regardless of amount spent).

On top of that, City Square Mall is also rewarding shoppers with a $5 City Square shopping voucher for every $200 spent ($250 if inclusive of NTUC FairPrice receipts). So hey, how’s that for participating in Singapore’s favourite pastime? 😛

Pastry Snaffle’s Catchcakes from Hakodate, Hokkaido (Japan)

I once had a friend cart back a box of Tokyo Banana for me. His suitcase was so stuffed to the brim, the flight an arduous 7 hours, that it’s a miracle that that box did not sustain a single dent on its way back (talk about durable Japanese packaging).

You don’t extend the same treatment to a box of Snaffle’s Catchcakes, however. Even if it’s double wrapped and packed in a sturdy, true-to-size package. Why? Because these darlings are, quite literally, as delicate as a cloud.

Established in 1998, Pastry Snaffle’s is just one of the many brands that have since crossed the Pacific Ocean (last year, to be precise) to invade our sunny, Japan-hungry shores. With three outlets at Plaza Singapura, Bedok Mall and VivoCity to date, and another on the way, it’s safe to say that Snaffles is here to stay. 😀
