Dumpling Darlings @ Amoy Street – Lola Cafe’s Newest Asian Food Venture in the CBD

It seems that Asian street food is all the rage these days, with various hole-in-the-wall type joints popping up to serve their take on what is a beloved staple for many. When I first visited Lola’s Cafe a whole five years ago (back when I started this blog; time flies!), little did I expect this homegrown cafe to venture into the Asian food business.

A familiar name amongst carnival goers, Dumpling Darlings has made its permanent on the same side of Amoy Street as three years old Wanton. Being an avid eater of dumplings myself, I knew I had to swing by their premises as soon as I could.

Signature 8-flavoured Xiao Long Bao @ Paradise Dynasty

With its tender minced meat encased in a flavourful broth and smooth flour skin, it’s no wonder that xiao long bao is fast becoming a fixture in our Chinese palate. There’s little not to love about this bite-sized offering of meat and broth, which is why restaurants and eateries across the country are catching on to this delicious trend faster than you can say, “zai lai yi long!” (translation: bring me another!)

Confessing your ignorance about this dish is about as sacrilegious as, say, telling others that you don’t like to eat chicken rice; it’s just not possible. Thankfully, there are many places you can go to to “right the wrongs” and taste the legend of xiao long bao yourself. 😉

[CLOSED] JPOT @ Tampines 1

Update June 2020: JPOT has closed.

The first thing we noticed when my dad and I stepped into JPOT’s branch in Tampines 1 was its looooong Condiments Bar where we could mix and match our condiments in every combination imaginable, including chili padi, spring onions, chopped garlic, peanut sauce, sesame oil, soya sauce, chili oil and more.

Peanut sauce and sesame oil topped with spring onions? Or chilli padi drenched in soya sauce and chopped garlic? Hey, no one’s stopping you!

[CLOSED] Din Gi Noodle House @ Plaza Singapura

Update June 2020: Din Gi Noodle House has closed.

It was a slightly rainy Sunday when a couple of my mates and I popped by Plaza Singapura looking for a bite to eat, having frolicked the entire day at Marina Barrage for our graduation photo shoot. We decided to check out Din Gi Noodle House, home of the much loved and talked about 一根面 yi gen mian  or single strand noodle.

Tucked away in a corner of Basement 2 of Plaza Singapura, Din Gi Noodle House looked nondescript and we would have completely missed it if not for a couple of chefs hard at work, making their signature single strand noodle with nothing but a pile of dough and years of dedication and practice.

[CLOSED] Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice Eating House

Update June 2020: Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice Eating House has closed.

Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long; four years of living close by to what could possibly be the best duck rice in Singapore and it never occurred to me to check out this humble stall. It wasn’t until I heard that Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice Eating House would be serving its final plate of braised duck rice on 22 June 2013 that I found out that this gem of a stall was about a mere five bus stops away from my Hall in NUS.

Can you believe it? All this time I never knew such good food existed (almost) right outside my doorstep, and here I am, about to graduate and move away from this strategic spot!

But as they say, it’s better late than never, and late though it is, I’m definitely not going to miss out on this chance to try the much talked about Teochew Boneless Duck Rice before it disappears for good.
