Dalgona Coffee – The Ultimate Foam or Fail Korean Coffee Recipe to Whisk Through Quarantine
I’ve been feeling a little stir-crazy from weeks of company and government-imposed stay home policies, and with Singapore’s circuit breaker month in full swing, there’s never been a better time to try something new from home!
Now, unless you’ve been living under a rock (or voluntarily disconnected from the internet), you would have seen this luscious, cloud-like coffee foam-topped beverage making the rounds on several people’s social media.
Dubbed Dalgona Coffee, it is the latest foodie fad to go viral. And luckily for you, you can whip this up from the comfort of home – no trips to your nearest hipster cafe needed!
Wild Blooms @ The Midtown Residences, Hougang – Floral Themed Cafe with 3D Flower Jelly Cakes and a Four Metre Wall Mural
Wild Blooms, the latest addition at The Midtown in Hougang, is best described as an Instagrammer’s dream gone wild. Featuring an explosion of floral decor from top to bottom, this cozily sized cafe screams feminine from the moment you step in.
From the array of dehydrated bouquets hanging from the ceiling at the ground level, to the larger-than-life, handmade wall mural, there’s nary a spot that cannot serve as a beautiful backdrop for your OOTD (outfit of the day) photos.
[Closed] 1460 Tteokbokki @ Cineleisure – Grab Your Korean Street Snacks and Rainbow Bingsu Here (Invite)
Update June 2020: 1460 Tteokbokki has closed.
If there’s one thing I miss the most about my summer stint in Korea as a student, it’s got to be walking along the busy, neon lit streets with a piping hot snack in hand – ok, let’s be real here, I always miss the food most in every country I visit.
ANYWAY. I was psyched to hear that a Korean street snack shop had opened in the heart of Orchard Road, at Cineleisure. Helmed by the same team behind Joo Bar, E!ght Korean BBQ and Sticky, 1460 Tteokbooki is a casual takeaway snack shop that specialises in various renditions of tteokbokki, as its name suggests!
The Korean Fire Noodle 불닭볶음면 Challenge
“My friend ate, she said two bites in and she gave up. And she can take chilli really well. Good luck!”
And on that ever so encouraging note, I embarked on my attempt at the Korean Fire Noodle 불닭볶음면 Challenge.
Ranked third on The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Spiciest Instant Noodles of All Time 2014, 불닭볶음면 – which roughly stands for Hot Fried Chicken – has recently gained infamy for making the hardiest of spice seekers surrender in agony. So intense is its flavour, that people worldwide have challenged each other to finish one serving in the shortest time possible… or finish it at all.
Hmm, fire noodles, ALS ice bucket – why do most viral challenges these days involve hurting ourselves physically in one way or another?
[Closed] Sarang @ Orchard Central
[Update 8 Jun 2016: Sarang has closed.]
The trouble with living in Singapore is that you’re constantly surrounded by a myriad of mouth-watering delicacies that hail from all four corners of the world. To the effect that “What shall we have for lunch/ dinner?” sparks off an unsolvable dilemma, day after day.
And let’s not forget those fusion and concept restaurants that have popped up around our sunny island. Sometimes, I secretly wish that I have an expandable tummy just so I can eat all the food I want, without risking a tummy ache or worse, growing a second me!
First world problems aside, we made our reservations at Sarang, an up and coming Korean restaurant that has garnered a lot of hype for its Korean tapas dining concept (or so they say).
Located on the upper levels of Orchard Central, Sarang has a gorgeous alfresco dining area that commands a picturesque view of Orchard Road and beyond.
