[CLOSED] Fish Tales @ *SCAPE

Update 20 Jan 2025: Fish Tales has closed.

Cafes and poached eggs may be all the rage now, but there are times when we’d like nothing more than to retreat to some good ol’ fast food after a long and tiring day. Fish Tales, with its plethora of seafood burgers, pastas and more, is one such that place that recently opened in town.

Located on *SCAPE’s second level, which is essentially the ground level just beyond the flea market, the cafe’s sitting area is spread across the far end of the building, making it ideal for a casual meal. Most diners are young adults and adolescents, as befits *SCAPE’s youth oriented vibe.

[CLOSED] Stranger’s Reunion @ Outram Park

Update 20 Jan 2025: Stranger’s Reunion has closed.

Us Singaporeans sure have a way of making our lives revolve around food; we spend the better half of the morning looking forward to lunch, do most of our socialising over a cuppa – heck, we even make a hobby out of it by way of cafe hopping.

It’s no wonder, then, that places like Stranger’s Reunion have since become synonymous with the coming together of people over a shared love of food. Like a reliable friend who you can always count on, this quaint cafe stayed open during the recent public holiday so off we went to take advantage of the remainder of our long weekend!

[CLOSED] Artistry Cafe @ Kampong Glam

Update June 2020: Artistry has closed.

Ever heard of those legendary hawker stalls that open to snaking queues and sell out before the day is halfway through? I feel like Artistry is on its way to setting that benchmark in the cafe world. Its hot favourites, namely Big Breakfast and Eggs on Toast, sell like hot cakes and, coupled with a kitchen that closes at 4pm everyday, means that a full course indulgence eludes customers who are none the wiser, i.e. me.

Nevertheless, a ten minute pilgrimage under Singapore’s unforgiving sun from Bugis Junction to its Kampong Glam based premises warrants a reward for the rumbling tummy, so I decided to give the good folks at Artistry a chance on both visits, and boy, am I glad I did. 😉

[MOVED] The Assembly Ground @ The Cathay

Update 20 Jan 2025: The Assembly Ground has moved to Somerset.

If you were confused initially by The Assembly Ground’s presence at The Cathay, you’re not alone. This newly opened cafe is the F&B counterpart to The Assembly fashion store, and it bears no relation whatsoever to its namesake, Assembly Coffee in Evans Road.

It also breaks the mould of not being situated in an out-of-reach, hole-in-the-wall kind of neighbourhood.

[CLOSED] Charlie Brown Cafe @ Orchard Cineleisure

Update 20 Jan 2025: Charlie Brown Cafe has closed.

Growing up, if there’s anything I like more than leisurely weekend breakfasts, it’s gotta be the cartoons that they used to air on those mornings. Pokémon, Powerpuff Girls – you name it. Few things were as good as watching my favourite onscreen heroes and heroines with a plateful of home cooked goodness in front of the telly. 😀

With themed cafe’s like the Charlie Brown Cafe at Orchard Cineleisure and 313 Somerset, there’s no need to wait around all week for the opportune moment. At both its alfresco and indoor outlets, the simple-minded, yellow shirt-donning boy stands tall with his pet beagle, promising a slice of childhood for shoppers and office workers alike in Singapore’s busiest commercial district.

[CLOSED] The Chop House 2-Course Set Lunch @ VivoCity

Update June 2020: The Chop House has closed.

Like the neighbouring ports, VivoCity plays host to a smorgasbord of cultures, brands and flavours. Just a walk down the promenade will bring you up close with some of the world’s most mouthwatering cuisines – from classic Western flavours by Brotzeit and Jamie’s Italian to explosively tantalising Asian offerings like Crystal Jade and Menya Musahi.

The Chop House is one of them; branded as Singapore’s first self-tap beer gastrobar, it is the brainchild of the team behind Wooloomooloo Steakhouse, another hugely popular joint for meat maestros and closet carnivores. But while this vibrant-hued gastrobar is a regular haunt for lovers of the self-proclaimed “liquid diet” (cue pints of beer on a Friday night), The Chop House has also rolled out a 2-Course Set Lunch for the corporate bound at nearby HarbourFront offices, as well as hungry tourists on weekdays for S$19.90

Krispy Kreme @ Income at Raffles Opening (Invite)

Having bound myself to a desk job for the past eleven months, there’s nothing that I crave more than a sugar rush every day. There’s something about the sweet, sweet taste of a sugary treat that makes it so gratifying amid impending deadlines. 😉

Luckily for office dwellers at Singapore’s Central Business District, Krispy Kreme has opened its second outlet at Income at Raffles, meaning that doughnut-craving customers around Raffles can get their fix any time, whether it’s a quick snack between meetings or an after work binge. As expected, Krispy Kreme’s second store opened to much fan fare, including a public teaser and a couple of social media campaigns that built up to it (more on that later!).
