When in Tokyo: How to Spot Mt Fuji From Your Flight

Despite the fact that I have traveled to Tokyo at least five times, my luck with viewing the elusive Mt Fuji has been regrettably abysmal. In fact, this mountain is so notoriously shy, there is a mere 80-day window in which it can be viewed clearly!

Fortunately, I was able to score a “second wind” of luck on my return flight from my most recent trip!

For those flying out of Tokyo to Singapore, your best bet is to do so from Haneda Airport. This is because these flight routes usually pass through the south side of Mt Fuji to get to the west side of Japan, granting you a view like no other of this majestic mountain.

Aside from that, Haneda Airport is also highly recommended for its open-air viewing deck, Tokyo Pop Town, and even hot springs.

I flew via Singapore Airlines on a Boeing 777-300ER (77W). To guarantee a good, unhindered view of Mt Fuji (ie. without the plane wings), your best bet on this plane is around row 55, on the right side (seats H – K). Needless to say, I went all out and got the window seat!

Fujisan should appear within 30 minutes after takeoff, so get your cameras ready as the plane will cruise past in under 5 minutes.

Seeing Mt Fuji, complete with its snow-capped peak from above, is truly something. Don’t close the blinds just yet, as good weather might permit you to view other equally spectacular views of Japan’s mountainscape before you’re out of Japanese airspace for good.

If you are flying via Japan Airlines, you can also check out this nifty FAQ page which has more information about its flight routes.

Booking the rightmost seat was worth the research and trouble. If you’re looking for the ideal way to round off your Tokyo trip, do so with a parting view of Mt Fuji from your flight!
