Paaru Bakery @ Pearl’s Hill Terrace, Chinatown – Fresh Shokupan and Japanese Cakes in an Intimate Kitchen Studio

There is something charming about walking into a cozy bakery filled with all types of inviting aromas and goods, picking up a freshly baked loaf, and going about your day. Paaru Bakery is the sister bakery to Paaru Cafe, a hole-in-the-wall, Japanese-style cafe which recently opened at Pearl’s Hill Terrace

Opened by the same team behind Asaru Studio, which gained attention for its appointment-only uchi sessionsPaaru Bakery is a studio kitchen concept that offers freshly baked shokupan, shortcakes, and other baked goods.

While Paaru Cafe opened to overwhelming attention from customers, Paaru Bakery is comparatively understated, with just a naked lightbulb indicating its presence down the corridor from Asaru Studio.

While most of Paaru Bakery is occupied by Chef Yuki Kaneda’s workstation, customers can have their cakes and eat them – literally, on a long, singular bench while watching the baking action. Unfortunately, the bakery’s goods are not sold at Paaru Cafe, so you should get them before or after heading over.

If there’s one thing that Japanese bakeries should be lauded for, it’s their ability to turn the richest, most decadent desserts into light treats that do not leave you feeling too heavy. The Strawberry Shortcake ($10+) has a perfect balance of creaminess and tartness, and the sponge is airy and subtle in taste. Chocolate banana shortcake is also available.

The Financier ($2) is a wallet-friendly snack you should not miss out on. Crisp on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside, you can count yourself lucky if you score one that’s fresh out of the oven. I loved the subtle sweetness that followed each bite!

Shokupan is one of the hottest items on Paaru’s menu right now, and not just because it’s used in its sister cafe’s brunch dishes. Each slice is dense yet fluffy, making it a good base for eggs on toast or even eaten on its own with jam and butter. The Matcha Azuki Shokupan ($16+) boasts a mix of milk and matcha-forward flavours, with pockets of sweetness from the azuki paste.

If you find yourself contending with the notoriously long queue at Paaru Cafe, Paaru Bakery is a decent alternative where you can sit back with your favourite cakes and baked goods. Fair warning though, everything sells quickly here.
