DAWN Kissa @ Southbridge Road, Clarke Quay – Rustic and Understated Japanese-Style Cafe

Japanese-inspired cafes have become all the rage in Singapore, with their understated atmosphere, minimalist decor, and rustic menus. Helmed by an ex-Kurasa barista, DAWN Kissa has made a name for itself with its homemade bakes and light bites.

The unassuming cafe is situated next to RULER Japanese Hair Salon on Southbridge Road, opposite Kura Patisserie, another Japanese-inspired cafe. Southbridge Road is becoming quite the enclave for cafes like these.

Stepping in, you are greeted by a wave of tranquility, from the cozy lighting to the soft, jazzy playlist. The entrance featuring a singular longitudinal window transforms the space into a cozy escape from the busyness that permeates this side of the CBD.

I have to say that the variety of baked goods and sandos that DAWN manages to churn out in spite of its small space, is pretty impressive. Although, these are made in limited quantities and sell out pretty quickly.

The Blueberry Galette ($9) is delicious and crumbly, with tart-forward flavours from the blueberries. The jammy consistency of the blueberries lends it is comfort factor, and I love that their natural sweetness takes center stage. The galette itself is crisp yet crumbly. Normally I’m not a fan of overly thick or hard pastries but, the textures were pretty on point!

The Blackberry Crumb Cake ($8.50) is another zesty baked good that caught my eye as I was looking for an alternative to the sold-out Apple Crumble. Compared to the intense flavours of the Blueberry Galette, I found this to be on the bland side, even with the use of whole blackberries. The sugary and crunchy crumbling at the top was what sold it for me.

While DAWN Kissa has a decent selection of coffees, you can find other thirst quenchers such as housemade soda and Cold Brew Tea ($7). While certainly refreshing, I found it to be a tad pricey for its size.

DAWN Kissa remains popular almost a year on from its opening. Having patronised now-defunct RONIN where founder Jane was previously from, I’m truly happy to see someone as sincere and dutiful as her, find success with her own cafe in the same neighbourhood.
