Do you recall when waffle and dessert cafes were all the rage in HDB estates? It’s time to take it back to basics with a visit to Rise, a not-so-hidden dessert joint in Potong Pasir that’s selling fresh waffles, gelato, and artisanal cakes. 

Like most under-HDB cafes, Rise’s space is noticeably cozy and compact, with the baking area occupying a good half of its interior. 

Stepping in, you are immediately greeted by the enticing aroma of warm, fresh waffles. The cafe’s aesthetics also clearly cater to millennial and Gen Z tastes, from the distinct pink walls to the cutesy patterns on its cakes. 

Rise’s teacakes and sliced cakes are the most popular items on its menu, and I was no doubt spoilt for choice as I was taking my pick from the array of goodies on the display counter. The Raspberry Lychee Rose Teacake ($7.50) is one of Rise’s signature items and the prettiest of the lot. 

Biting in, you can taste the raspberry rose-flavoured cake packed with bis of juicy lychee. The sweetness of the icing complements the subtle-tasting sponge. I liked that the cake base is also moist and fluffy.

I also had the chance to try the Daisy Cloud Latte ($7.50) from the limited-time summer menu. This milky concoction consisted of a refreshing butterfly pea white latte topped with a sweet and sticky daisy meringue cookie, an aesthetic that is firmly at home with the weirdcore decor movement that’s taken over social media. 

I was also pleasantly surprised to find that you’re also able to order bottled brews from the now-defunct Cafe Coco from the cafe’s online menu! 

Daisy Cloud Latte ($7.50)

Rise is a true heartland gem that strives for comforting flavours in an aesthetically-pleasing package. Good news if you want to check them out without needing to brave the queue; they’ve opened a second outlet with an expanded space and menu in Orchard!
