Urban Folks @ Margaret Market, Queenstown – Aussie-Inspired Cafe Serving Jaffles with an Asian Twist

The Dawson-Queenstown neighbourhood just got a major upgrade in the form of Margaret Market, a refurbished, air-conditioned space fitted with seven local eateries and cafes. One of these is Urban Folks

Inspired by founder Vernetta Fong’s time as a student in Melbourne, Australia, Urban Folks’ menu has all the trappings of an Australian cafe – namely, jaffles, acai, and coffee.

Fitted with wood-themed furniture, greenery, and rattan lights, the kiosk also brings to mind a Bali-style space. Compared to the communal area which is rather packed, the scattering of chairs and tables in Urban Folks’ space makes it rather cozy and relaxed.

For food, you can choose from a variety of savoury and sweet jaffles (stuffes toasties with the sides sealed shut) with an Asian twist, such as kimchi and chili eggs. Sandwiches are on the menu as well. I’ve only heard of one other place in Singapore that serves jaffles (Amber Ember), so I was pretty intrigued about this.

The Curry-San Jaffle ($9.80) which consists of house-made Japanese beef curry with caramelised onions and a house blend of cheese, feels like a warm, comforting hug from your mother after a long day at school. I loved how the beef was firm and the curry not too watery, with just the right thickness. Almost like a Western version of xiao long bao where you bite into the crisp toastie and slurp up the curry!

For drinks, you can choose from a small range of coffee. The Matcha Latte ($5.50) proved most refreshing, and I appreciated the hints of bitterness from the matcha powder.

Urban Folks is a unique addition to Margaret Market, and it would be interesting to see what other Asian-inspired flavours they can come up with for their jaffles. Queenstown residents will certainly have lots more exciting food options in the area.
