Kimbap is touted as one of the staples in Korean cuisine. Yet, you’d be hard-pressed to find a wide range of renditions of this street food as you would at Oni Kimbap, a former home-based Korean food business that recently opened its dine-in location at Aperia Mall in Lavender.
Occupying the same space as Aurora Bar, Oni Kimbap is situated a short walk from the new Thai Supermarket which moved from the now-defunct Golden Mile Complex. The casual eatery is currently open in the afternoon on weekdays, with self-pick-up and islandwide delivery available throughout the week.
True to its name, Oni Kimbap sells a variety of flavours, including seasonal ones such as soba and mentaiko, the former of which replaces the typical rice filling with buckwheat noodles. From seafood-based flavours like kani and ebi, to pork sausage and even cream cheese walnut, diners can expect to find kimbap that satiates their cravings.
Their real claim to fame, though, is the rice-less kimbap which replaces rice with fluffy egg sheets. What you get is kimbap which is noticeably less dense than its rice-based counterpart, and satisfying, silky textures from the egg sheets. The Rice-less Kani Kimbap ($11.90+) which I tried was creamy and comforting, with distinctly fresh flavours.

Kimbap is not the only thing on the menu; you can also try other rice and noodle-based mains, as well as popular street snacks like Tteokbokki ($5.90+, add $1 for cheese). I was not expecting it to be as soft as it was! It’s a pretty substantial side dish, with sliced pork sausages and other goodies thrown into a mildly spicy sauce.

Oni Kimbap is as unpretentious as they come, and you can sample some pretty authentic and decent Korean foods at reasonable prices. Count yourself lucky if you’re living or working near Aperia Mall!
