The holiday season is in full swing, with our social feeds flooded with envy-inducing travel photos from popular destinations like Taiwan.
For the rest of us Singapore-bound folks, there’s always authentic eateries such as 8 Degrees, who recently moved their third outlet from Serangoon to Lowland Road near Kovan MRT station.

The ambience at their newest Kovan outlet is as simple and comforting as their menu. Here, the bustling chatter of customers and workers alike are reminiscent of the hole-in-the-wall eateries that are ever so prominent in Taiwan.

While the dining space is compact, 8 Degrees’ menu is certainly not. Tuck into authentic and affordably-priced dishes that are prepared with love. Classic choices include Braised Pork Rice ($6.48), which is as straightforward as it comes. The braised pork pieces are highly tender, with a melt-in-your-mouth consistency that’s comforting.

I wasn’t expecting much from the Scallion Oil Chicken Rice ($6.48), so this turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The chicken is as tender and flavourful as its pork counterpart, and the scallions add a refreshing crunch. I can see myself seeking this bowl of comfort after work.

It goes without saying that the Oyster Meesua ($6.48) is a must-try. Served with fresh oysters and topped with fried garlic and coriander, this starchy dish is an ideal remedy for colder days. For someone who isn’t too big on meesua, I found 8 Degrees’ rendition to be well-balanced in terms of flavour. I love that the oysters aren’t overly fishy and the vinegar used is in the right amount!

Do not underestimate the satisfaction a dish as simple as Sesame Cold Noodles ($7.56) can bring you. Tossed in a sesame sauce and topped with shredded cucumber and crushed peanuts, this is a decent base dish to pair with other side dishes.

Speaking of side dishes, there is no shortage of them at 8 Degrees. From the classic popcorn chicken to healthier, vegetable-based creations.

Taiwanese Snacks and Side Dishes
No Taiwanese meal is complete without bubble tea, and 8 Degrees definitely delivers. If you’re a fan of intense, sweet flavors, the milk tea will hit the spot. Otherwise, refresh yourselves with other classic desserts such as the citrus-forward Lemon Aiyu with Passionfruit ($5.18).
