Frankie & Fern’s @ Holland Avenue, Holland Village – “Hidden” Rooftop Cafe with Boho Vibes; Brunch till 4pm Daily

I know what you’re thinking – another cafe in another cafe-overrun neighbourhood with specialty menus for lunch and dinner with the same island living-inspired decor. But, hear me out on this one!

Frankie & Fern’s is the new kid on the block – more specifically, Holland Avenue in Holland Village, that launched a little over a month back, and is already drawing non-stop queues to its “hidden” rooftop premises.

Its premises scream boho chic, and the layout makes you feel like you’re stepping into someone’s extended living room. Be prepared to wait for up to an hour if you’re walking in; otherwise, make a reservation the weekend before your visit. Props to the staff for managing the crowd as efficiently as they could.

For brunch, Frankie & Fern’s artisanal open toasts are highly recommended. The Roasted Short Rib Toast ($22++) is one of the best on the menu, and is said to sell out quickly.

Digging in, the roasted short rib melts in your mouth with its tender meat and fat. The citrus-forward flavours of the chimichurri and chilli-pickled cucumber are a refreshing counter to this richness, with the Russian dressing tying it together with its mild spiciness.

Don’t sleep on the Portobello Toast ($18++), either. This vegetarian brunch item boasts several elevated elements arranged beautifully on French toast, including truffle cream cheese, and brie cheese which complement the roasted portobello. The yuzu apple chunks and honey emulsion add welcome sweetness to the earthy flavours.

For sides, you can’t go wrong with the Duck Croquettes ($13++), which are breaded and fried to perfection, while retaining the duck meat’s tenderness and moistness. A tad expensive, although great for getting your protein fix with a vegetarian main dish.

And with the weather being as unforgivingly hot as it is of late, there’s nothing more welcome than some refreshing house-made drinks. I enjoyed the Sparkling Raspberry Lychee ($8++)

Come evening, Frankie & Fern’s switches its menu for a more sophisticated range of sharing plates. It’s a perfect spot for date nights and weekend gatherings with your buddies!
