Did you know that Southeast Asia is home to some iconic coffee beans? 

Luckin Coffee has launched its latest Single Origin Espresso (SOE) Black Cup Sumatra Gayo series, featuring exquisite Sumatra Gayo beans handpicked in the Gayo region in Sumatra, Indonesia, one of the many locations scouted by their Global Bean Hunting Initiative. 

For the uninitiated, SOE stands for single-origin or single-area espresso, whose distinct flavours and aromas are created by the unique soil, climate, altitude, and other environmental conditions the coffee beans are found in. 

Sourced at high altitudes between 1200 and 1800 meters in Aceh Gayo in Sumatra, Indonesia, the Sumatra Gayo beans are dubbed the “Treasure of the Tropical Rainforest”, as introduced by 2023 WBC Champion and Luckin Coffee’s Chief Coffee Master, Boram Um during April’s coffee media workshop.

From 3 May, Luckin Coffee’s limited Black Cup Sumatra Gayo series promises quality and taste and is available islandwide. So what can you expect from the fertile, volcanic soil of the Gayo region and the traditional Indonesian wet hulling methods used in crafting this uniquely Asian coffee bean? 

You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the Sumatra Gayo beans’ clean, herbal fragrance and their sugary notes of cherry, caramel, and cedar. Go for the Sumatra Gayo Americano ($5.60) or Sumatra Gayo Flat White ($6.40) if you’re seeking an extra perk-me-up. Otherwise, try the Sumatra Gayo Dirty ($6.80) for a more milk-forward taste.
