Lad & Co @ Singapore Post, Tanglin Road – No-Fuss Classic British Food Near Orchard Road

Classic British food is one of those straightforward, no-fuss cuisines that is easy to learn but challenging to stand out with. Lad & Co has made a name for its British pub-style food since its days as a family-run hawker stall at Maxwell.

Now occupying an entirely alfresco area on the first level of Singapore Post Tanglin Branch, the fast-casual eatery offers simple and delicious food in an unpretentious setting. It’s ideal for nearby office workers seeking food-filled respite during lunch and dinner hours.

The classic Fish and Chips ($19+) is known for its extra crispy “better batter” and fluffy Norwegian haddock fillet brined for 12 hours. The warm, buttery fillet is the highlight, and the rich batter has a satisfying crunch. I also enjoyed the fries which are made with US potatoes. The mushy peas were a little subpar for me, although the tarty notes of the tartar sauce made up for it.

Fish and Chips ($19+)

The Scotch Egg ($12+) is a must-order if you’re looking for a substantial accompaniment to your meal. The fresh sausage meat and pickled egg are robust in taste, with the Japanese bread crumbs adding some crunch.

The Bangers and Mash ($16+) is another comforting fixture on Lad & Co’s menu. The English-style sausages, made with finely ground European pork, explode with flavour with every bite. The mash is on the bland side and could do with a little more seasoning – pair it with their house-made gravy sauce. (Wish there was more of that as well!)

With its location a little further away from the main Orchard Road strip, Lad & Co provides a welcome reprieve for lunch or dinner. Head here if you’re looking for some no-fuss, hearty food with a laidback atmosphere.
