*SCAPE Singapore’s revamp as part-youth hub, part-retail space brings with it a slew of new F&B chains and hangout spots. Hanco Coffee is a specialty coffee shop that opened in September, serving unique brews and baked goods.

The cafe is located on the outer side of the building, making it an ideal spot for people-watching. You can also cozy up at the communal table in the inner part of the cafe, away from the bustle of the main part of Orchard Road.

With regular beverages priced between $6 and $8, and specialty drinks costing upwards of $9, Hanco Coffee appears to cater more to the office crowd in the surrounding area (most customers at the time of my visit were office workers or people working remotely). Still, the service is quite attentive, and the baristas take the time to explain each specialty coffee to customers.
The Mango Got Sticky ($12) can pass for a cocktail with its layered appearance and dried mango garnish. The contrast between the bitterness of the coffee and the mango’s refreshing notes makes it a subtler-tasting version of an orange Americano. All in all, it’s a drinkable take on the beloved Thai mango sticky rice dessert that’s light and palatable.

Mango Got Sticky – Mango, rice milk, patchouli lemon ($12)
Looking for a non-caffeinated drink? Don’t sleep on the Mint Condition ($9), which is also the cheapest item from the specialty menu. What sold this drink for me was the pistachio milk, which added a smooth, creamy finish to the base concoction.

Mint Condition – Lemon verbena, pomelo lime, pistachio ($9)
While a walkthrough of the ingredients and flavour profile seems par for the course at most specialty coffee shops, Hanco Coffee takes it up a notch with quirky poem cards. Have a read at them!

Mild Spicy ($10)
There is also a limited selection of baked goods and desserts, with the cheesecake getting good reviews online.

Homemade Burnt Cheesecake ($9)
Hanco Coffee is a pleasant spot to chill and hang out if you’re in town but don’t want to jostle with the crowd. It would be interesting to see if they churn out any seasonal specialty drinks.
And best of all – no GST or service charge.
