It’s difficult to find French food that is both affordable and palatable, especially in the pricier downtown areas. Yet somehow, Saveur at The Cathay has managed to nail these two qualities in its menu throughout the years.
Many have patronised Shokotsu Ten, with its bevy of Japanese F&B concepts since its opening at NEX, but how many have heard of RE&S, the regional food company behind it?
For its 30th anniversary, RE&S has launched a Mentaiko Madness menu at 4 of its restaurants: Ichiban Sushi, Men-ichi Japanese Restaurant, Kabe no Ana, and Tokyo Eater Pop-Up Store. Lovers of this spicy cod roe, can savour a whopping 21 umami packed dishes ranging from ramen to mochi pizza.
So, how much mentaiko can YOU handle?
The North East zone has been fairly neglected in terms of must-visit cafes and food joints – until The Midtown’s opening in early 2017. Since then, a fair number of F&B joints have opened, giving Hougang more food options beyond the usual hawker fare.

Tiong Bahru, otherwise known to many as Singapore’s hipster enclave in the west, is home to yet another food and lifestyle concept. Going by the name of Merci Marcel, Marie Charlotte Ley and Antoine Rouland (of O Batignolles and O Comptoir)’s newest venture serves elegant French dishes for brunch and dinner crowds right next door to Tiong Bahru Bakery.
Since its opening late last year, Merci Marcel has transformed from a quaint French cafe-restaurant, to a bustling space filled to the brim with cafe hoppers eager to check out their culinary offerings. Cheese lovers will be glad to know they can buy their own wheel from Merci Marcel’s cheese fridge, where “the smelly cheese” is proudly displayed.
