Hello Hokkaido! Lavender Season @ Farm Tomita, Furano

All right, all right, I hear ye. I’ve noticed a surge in readership for my Hokkaido posts as of late, which means… holiday season is around the corner!

It looks like Japan is one of the hottest destinations for the summer, so here’s a major throwback to the highlight of my Hokkaido trip last year, when I visited the breathtaking flower fields at Farm Tomita, Furano.

Getting there was easy enough; we opted for the Chuo Bus Tour (link below) which took us around various places of interest besides Farm Tomita. The drawback is the limited amount of time you get to spend at each place, but I was suppose that’s a toss-up between a luxury of time and convenience. (I would seriously recommend driving over if you can, because you might wanna spend more than an hour frolicking amongst the gardens, just saying!)

When we arrived, I was simply awestruck by the sheer magnitude of flowers blooming, even though it was very early in the season.

[CLOSED] AEIOU @ King George’s Avenue

Update June 2020: AEIOU has closed.

There are cafes that serve great food in lacklustre setups, and there are cafes that look oh so Insta-worthy but serve sub-par dishes. AEIOU is one of those rare ones that combine both into one eclectic, delectable mix.

Taking residence in what used to be an antique store, the cafe prides itself on its simplicity and whimsicality, from its unpretentious fare to the downright quirky, re-purposed decor. Kind of like the “organized clutter” we all are so fond of seeing in our homes or office desks. 😉

The Korean Fire Noodle 불닭볶음면 Challenge

And on that ever so encouraging note, I embarked on my attempt at the Korean Fire Noodle 불닭볶음면 Challenge.

Ranked third on The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Spiciest Instant Noodles of All Time 2014, 불닭볶음면 – which roughly stands for Hot Fried Chicken – has recently gained infamy for making the hardiest of spice seekers surrender in agony. So intense is its flavour, that people worldwide have challenged each other to finish one serving in the shortest time possible… or finish it at all.

Hmm, fire noodles, ALS ice bucket – why do most viral challenges these days involve hurting ourselves physically in one way or another?

C-Side Sentosa @ Siloso Beach Walk (Sugar Rush)

If there’s one thing we can thank Singapore’s weather for, it’s the tropical cheeriness that lasts all year long. And at C-Side Sentosa, summer never ends!

Comprised of five F&B and beach bar outlets, C-Side served as the venue for our second SUGAR RUSH, as well as a new quarterly event called 3BS (more on that later). Having passed the area frequently during my university’s beach orientation games, I jumped at the chance to try their range of bar bites, cocktails and beers.

Ben & Jerry’s Flagship Scoop Shop Opening @ 313 Somerset (Invite)

Fans of Ben & Jerry’s are in for a double treat – with the opening of their new Flagship Scoop Store at 313 Somerset Discovery Walk, one can enjoy no less than 18 exciting ice cream flavours, along with new shakes, sundaes, ice cream cakes and merchandise in the heart of Singapore.

What’s more, with baked goods and herbs being supplied by SCORE Bakery and Edible Garden City, a rehabilitation outlet for inmates and urban farming group respectively, who’s to say you can’t indulge your sweet tooth without doing a little good to society? 😀

On top of that, the Flagship Scoop Store will also host a new Benefit Tuesday Night programme for local welfare organizations to engage the public; the first of which was tonight’s preview of the Peace, Love & Commoonity Sundae, courtesy of international food artist (and my personal favourite food Instagrammer of all time), Samantha Lee.

Update 20 Jan 2025: 23 Jumpin has closed.

Mention Tai Seng and the image conjured is that of industrial estates and droll cafeterias; classic Western fare and all-day brunch hardly factor in this neck of the woods.

And yet, just when every upscale neighbourhood and heartland corner finds itself saturated, along comes The Commerze with its smattering of cafes and salad bars. Thanks to Sugar’s search-by-location function, I chanced upon 23 Jumpin’ and decided to check it out.
