Unicorn on the Run

I became a unicorn last week.

No, I did not drink a magic potion that transformed me into the elusive mythical creature, complete with a glittery horn and shiny mane. Neither am I about to gallop off to the fantastical Land of Equestria. 😛

It all started when a friend of mine had a crazy idea to prance around Singapore in a unicorn mask and a T-shirt emblazoned with #unicornontherun. As part of a social media campaign aptly named Unicorn on the Run, the aim was to generate much buzz around an “average troll unicorn” which would in turn help her earn a spot in a Google ad camp. 😉

[CLOSED] Krispy Kreme @ Tangs Orchard

Update 20 Jan 2025: Krispy Kreme has closed at Tangs Orchard. Visit their other outlets.

When you live in a country that’s all about food, getting your hands on the latest food fad is an achievement that’s held in as high regard as say, finding the Holy Grail. Heck, that highly coveted bite that’s hogging your Instagram feed is the Holy Grail!

So when Krispy Kreme finally opened its doors on our sunny island, specifically, in the basement of Tangs Orchard, you can imagine the hype.  Free doughnuts, crazy queues, and dozens upon dozens of coverage across social media (see what I did there? :P ).

Oh, and that green polka dotted paper bag emblazoned with its name in red? It’s pretty much the Chanel of the doughnut world on this side of the Equator as we speak (or eat).

And so, I became one of ‘em “typical Singaporeans who will jump in a queue that’s longer than the Great Wall of China for the in thing”, on the pretext of pretext of promising my parents a taste of those delicious, pillow soft doughnuts.

Shutters @ Amara Sanctuary Resort (Groupon Deal)

It was a quiet Sunday evening when we dropped by Shutters at Amara Sancturary Resort.

Tucked away in a tranquil part of Sentosa, this restaurant seemed an ideal place to escape to for a quiet weekend dinner. And since we had a Groupon which entitled us to a Deluxe 3-Course Set Meal, all the more for us to check out this potential hidden gem! 😀

Stepping into its glass-encased premises, we were greeted by a handful of diners and resort guests tucking into its continental fare. The lush decor, coupled by a team of chefs working tirelessly in an open concept kitchen, put us in an indulgent mood for our meal. 😉

[MOVED] Maison Ikkoku Cocktail Bar @ Kandahar Street

Update 20 Jan 2025: Maison Ikkoku has moved to Amoy Street.

Stepping into Maison Ikkoku Cocktail Bar is like entering another world.

For one, its sophisticated and intimate interior is a far cry from the bustling cafe two storeys below. White brick walls and exposed steel pipes give this semi-al fresco bar an industrial feel, while sleek metallic globes hang from the ceiling as a sign of some out-of-this-world mixin’ going on.

Then there’s the menu: there isn’t. You choose your poison by telling ’em what you’re in the mood for (Something sweet? Minty? Strong?), and after a slightly surreal exchange, you sit back and watch Maison Ikkoku’s artisans shake and mix with an almost rhythmic grace.

Poulét @ VivoCity

Whenever French cuisine is mentioned, the image conjured is usually that of an immaculately dressed couple in a chi-chi, no-nonsense setting. Soft classical music plays in the background, while said couple discreetly cuts bite-sized portions from a minuscule dish.

Not at Poulét.

Touted for its Poulet Rôti (roast chicken), this casual restaurant is fast gaining a reputation for dishing up hearty, yet affordable meals. And judging from my recent visits, I’d say that’s a reputation that’s well earned! 😀

Read on and I’ll tell you why. 😉

Up, Up and Away: The Singapore Flyer

As someone who has spent her entire life cooped up in an urban jungle, I’ve never been a huge fan of observation towers. Whether it’s the N Seoul Tower in South Korea or the iconic Tokyo Tower in Japan, the idea of paying to take an elevator all the way up just to gaze down on an overcrowded city dwelling hardly appeals to me.

Having scored free unlimited rounds on the Singapore Flyer with my F1 pass a few weeks ago, though, I decided to check it out to see what the hype was all about!
