Stepping into Maison Ikkoku Cocktail Bar is like entering another world.
For one, its sophisticated and intimate interior is a far cry from the bustling cafe two storeys below. White brick walls and exposed steel pipes give this semi-al fresco bar an industrial feel, while sleek metallic globes hang from the ceiling as a sign of some out-of-this-world mixin’ going on.
Then there’s the menu: there isn’t. You choose your poison by telling ’em what you’re in the mood for (Something sweet? Minty? Strong?), and after a slightly surreal exchange, you sit back and watch Maison Ikkoku’s artisans shake and mix with an almost rhythmic grace.
Named after a Japanese seinen manga, Maison Ikkoku is the brainchild of Ethan Leslie Leong, a celebrity mixologist with a penchant for the quirkiest mixes in town. From classics like Long Island Tea to dessert-like concoctions such as the MI1 White French Maid, every drink is a special surprise, whether it’s an eclectic mix of flavours or an absolutely photogenic creation.
A couple of minutes later, my “something sweet, something fruity with a red apple” arrived as The Fabulous Diana V.
Created from a red apple, mint, lemon, pomegranate and gin, it really did live up to its “fabulous” title. Little chunks of apple floating around in a minty concoction that wasn’t too strong; just the way I like it. 😉
Loved the presentation too; that piece from the top of the apple looked like a lil hat perching on top of my drink. 😉
Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Kampong Glam, Maison Ikkoku Cocktail Bar is a true hidden gem, and a refreshing change from the usual mixes that I always have. Not that I’m an expert on drinks and such, but it’ll be interesting to head back with a different whim and see what else these geniuses have in store. 😛
What’s your mix? 😉
