[CLOSED] RONIN Cafe @ Hong Kong Street – Coffee and Eggs to Die For; Blink and You Might Miss This Hideout

Update June 2020: RONIN has closed.

Here’s a cafe that’s relatively off the grid – at least by today’s standards where information about any and every business is readily available online.

When it first opened its doors, RONIN Cafe was one of those “hidden finds” with little to no reviews, and no website or social media presence to inform customers of its opening hours or menu.

Not that they needed that kind of publicity, though, as the 30+ seater cafe remains thriving in its cosy corner on Hong Kong Street to this day; the lunchtime crowd didn’t die down till well after 3pm when I re-visited.

Regular travellers to Bangkok would be familiar with Artbox, the pop-up concept which features an array of hipster food and goods in giant shipping containers.

For fans of this famous flea market, the Singapore edition, consisting of over 300 stalls (made up of approximately 500 vendors in rotation) spread across 50 000 square feet, will be held at Marina Bayfront event space for the next 2 weekends.

Given all that hype, is Artbox Singapore worthy of a visit?

Hana Restaurant @ Forum The Shopping Mall – Home of the Flying Noodles (Invite)

Unless you’ve been living off the grid (i.e. away from social media), you would probably have seen Hana Restaurant’s famous flying noodles once or twice on your Instagram feed by now. The sister restaurant of the equally talked about Benjamin Browns Bistro & Bakery, also at Forum the Shopping Mall, recently overhauled their menu to beat the ever growing competition in Japanese fusion cuisine.

[Closed] 1460 Tteokbokki @ Cineleisure – Grab Your Korean Street Snacks and Rainbow Bingsu Here (Invite)

Update June 2020: 1460 Tteokbokki has closed.

If there’s one thing I miss the most about my summer stint in Korea as a student, it’s got to be walking along the busy, neon lit streets with a piping hot snack in hand – ok, let’s be real here, I always miss the food most in every country I visit.

ANYWAY. I was psyched to hear that a Korean street snack shop had opened in the heart of Orchard Road, at Cineleisure. Helmed by the same team behind Joo Bar, E!ght Korean BBQ and Sticky, 1460 Tteokbooki is a casual takeaway snack shop that specialises in various renditions of tteokbokki, as its name suggests!

[MOVED] A Poke Theory @ Boon Tat Street – Another Poke Bowl Place Opens in Singapore’s CBD (Invite)

Update 20 Jan 2025: A Poke Theory has closed in Boon Tat Street. Visit their other outlets.

Work in the CBD, and you’ll never hungry – or so they say. Actually, the proper saying is, work in the CBD, and you’ll be spoilt for choice every day over what to eat, because there are so many options available for the same type of cuisine.

This time, the cuisine in question is Hawaiian. More specifically, the wildly popular and healthy Poke Bowl. Hot on the heels of Aloha Poke on Amoy Street, A Poke Theory has opened its doors on Boon Tat Street. Time for a little friendly competition? 😉

A Poke Theory

Head’s up if you plan on getting your Poke fix at – they ran out of Poke bowls at 1pm on their first day. Better head down early!
