The old adage, the early bird catches the worm, could not be more true at Da Dong Prawn Noodles, known for its umami prawn noodles that consistently sell out way before its 2pm closing time.

Tucked away in a sleepy corner of Joo Chiat Road, Da Dong Prawn Noodles is a heritage hawker stall that is currently run by second-generation owner Watson Lim, who took over the business from his father in 2018. The stall has been running strong since 1966, when it first opened.

With the pandemic putting a damper on eating out and cafe-hopping, it’s heartening to see home-based bakers expanding from online storefronts to brick-and-mortar setups. 

Tigerlilly Patisserie, headed by ex-Vianney Massot Restaurant pastry chef Naxine Ngooi, has joined the burgeoning enclave of foodie spots on Joo Chiat Road, a stone’s throw away from Da Dong Prawn Noodles.

Upper Thomson Road has come into its own as a destination for hip cafes and notable eateries. And with the recent opening of the Thomson East Coast Line making it more accessible, there’s no excuse to not go exploring.  

Oaks Coffee Co., opened by the team behind The Kins’ at Pasir Panjang, has joined the burgeoning cafe scene on the upper-east side of Singapore.

Gochi-So Shokudo @ Jewel Changi Airport – Premium Iberico Pork Restaurant with Seasonal Specials (Media)

It’s not often you can use the words “Iberico pork” and “wallet-friendly” in the same sentence, so it was a pleasant surprise to discover that Gochi-So Shokudo, a casual Japanese eatery, has been serving quality dishes at affordable price points.

Since its opening in 2019,  more outlets have popped up around Singapore, bringing its pork dishes to customers islandwide. Its Jewel Changi Airport is situated next to the HSBC Rain Vortex, with plenty of seats abound.

Minced Pork Bros @ Old Airport Road Food Centre – Traditional Bak Chor Mee with Modern Influences (Media)

Bak chor mee is one of those quintessentially Singaporean things that is hard not to love, yet is not easy to nail either. Thankfully for our local food heritage, new contenders like Minced Pork Bros are rising to the challenge of preserving one of our favourite supper dishes, albeit with a few modern twists.

Opened by the owners of hawker legend Roast Paradise, also located at Old Airport Road Food Centre, Minced Pork Bros is a mod-concept stall. Its “young generation” founders, Randall Gan and Kai Koh, have previously collaborated with media personalities such as Class 95FM and The Muttons.
