Tigerlily Patisserie @ Joo Chiat Road, Joo Chiat – Intricate Desserts and Pastries by Ex-Les Amis and Tarte Chef

With the pandemic putting a damper on eating out and cafe-hopping, it’s heartening to see home-based bakers expanding from online storefronts to brick-and-mortar setups.

Tigerlilly Patisserie, headed by ex-Vianney Massot Restaurant pastry chef Naxine Ngooi, has joined the burgeoning enclave of foodie spots on Joo Chiat Road, a stone’s throw away from Da Dong Prawn Noodles.

The cafe has adopted a tropical theme, both in menu and decor. Bright, eye-catching colours catch your eye as soon as you step in. While the wood-themed furniture with terrazoo tabletops make you feel like you are walking into a beachside resort, even on a rainy afternoon.

Every dessert cafe needs a signature creation that captures its artistry and theme. To me, that is what The Beehive ($15+) is.

The sphere-like honey parfait topped with yuzu mousse in a honeycomb pattern is one of the most artistic creations I’ve encountered at a local cafe. Breaking into the shell, you can taste the sweet and tart flavours of the lemon thyme with litchi honey jelly and light lemon sponge.

I’ve a weakness for honey-themed desserts, and the balance of flavours, coupled with the dessert’s lightness and aesthetics, made this a winner in my book.

With its smooth, white exterior studded with pink flower petals and sliced pistachio, you might wonder if the Pink Guava & Pear ($13+) was inspired by the cafe’s terrazoo tabletops themselves. Compared to The Beehive’s intense flavours, this fruit-forward dessert is more subtle and refreshing. Digging into the elderflower liqueur pear mousse, you can taste the pink guava jelly and fresh pears within.

Tigerlily Patisserie is a promising addition to the hipster foodie neighbourhood that is Joo Chiat, and it has already collaborated with note-worthy brands like Magnum and 51 Tras. It’ll be exciting to see what Chef Maxine Ngooi cooks up next.
