It’s not often you can use the words “Iberico pork” and “wallet-friendly” in the same sentence, so it was a pleasant surprise to discover that Gochi-So Shokudo, a casual Japanese eatery, has been serving quality dishes at affordable price points.
Since its opening in 2019, more outlets have popped up around Singapore, bringing its pork dishes to customers islandwide. Its Jewel Changi Airport is situated next to the HSBC Rain Vortex, with plenty of seats abound.
What stands out about Gochi-So Shokudo is its use of Bellota Iberico pork, which is yielded from pigs that are raised free-range for two years instead of the usual ten to twelve months! The eatery’s ability to keep prices relatively low is thanks to its parent company controlling the supply chain of the Iberico Pork trading.
Japanese-style dishes such as Truffle Chestnut Pork Jowl Don ($12.90++) are generously portioned with tender, juicy cuts that are charcoal-grilled to perfection. The earthy-tasting mushrooms and runny onsen egg are a plus, too. Supberbly reasonable for the quality of ingredients, and worth every dollar.

Fans of char siew will enjoy the Iberico Secreto – Black Char Siew ($9.80++). Well seared with a sticky sweet aftertaste, think of this as an elevated take on the humble hawker dish. I highly recommend eating this quicker while the meat is still relatively tender.

For sides, there are also a number of seafood and carb-based dishes for variety.

Oyster Katsu ($7.80++ for 3 pieces)
You can also enjoy Western fare like the Iberico Collar Steak ($16.50++ for 200g), though I felt this dish fell short of the others. While the meat is tasty enough, it’s bordering on dry – tough, even. Stick to the Japanese menu to enjoy the best cuts Gochi-So Shokudo has to offer.

Gochi-So Shokudo also releases seasonal items from time to time. Look out for the Truffle Katsu ($18.90++) which features fried juicy pork layered with truffle, cheese, and mushrooms! The mille-feuille katsu is incredibly tender and easy to bite into (more so than your average katsu), and each mouthful yields comforting, umami flavours from the cheese and mushrooms. If you’re not a huge fan of tonkatsu, this will definitely convert you.
