Citrus By The Pool & Citrus Bistro @ Woodlands and Sengkang – Satisfying Halal Certified Cafe Fare by the Pool; Free Entry into Sengkang Swimming Complex for Diners (Invite)

Update 19 Jan 2025: Citrus Bistro has closed. Visit Cirus By The Pool in Woodlands.

Ah, Sundays by the pool. When I was a child, there was nothing better than escaping the relentless heat with an afternoon at the swimming pool, followed by a hearty lunch with family under the sturdy shelter of an umbrella table.

For families taking a refreshing dip at Woodlands and Sengkang Sports Centres, Citrus By The Pool and its sister cafe, Citrus Bistro, offer western and Asian fusion fare that is pretty bang for buck, in terms of flavours and portions!

Best of all, diners at Citrus Bistro enjoy free entry to the swimming complex – just dial the number on the signboard next to the gantry and a friendly staff will usher you in.

Old Chang Kee Flagship Store @ MacKenzie Road – Singapore’s Favourite Homegrown Snack Chain Returns to Its Roots Opposite REX (Invite)

How many of us remember stopping by Old Chang Kee to grab a bite on the way home from work? Yeah, about 90% of the population because they’re practically everywhere. In fact I just broke my diet last week when I caved in to temptation while walking past one of their outlets near my home.

ANYWAY.

Good news for all of us who can’t get enough of their famed curry puffs; Old Chang Kee just welcomed its first flagship store on MacKenzie road, opposite REX Cinema, with affiliated brands including Curry Times, Bun Times, and Dip ‘n’ Go coming together under one big roof to whet appetites with their popular snacks, and then some.

[CLOSED] Roy Thai Kitchen @ Hougang Block 106 – Authentic Thai Food in a Kopitiam (Invite)

Update 19 Jan 2025: Roy Thai Kitchen has closed.

Did you know? Roy stands for “authentic” in Thai. So don’t go asking for a man named Roy the next time you’re at Roy Thai Kitchen in Hougang Block 106.

Jokes aside, though, it’s evident that the owners of Roy Thai Kitchen were gunning for authenticity, judging by the strong flavours of sweet, sour and spicy in their cooking. No punches spared on the palate!

Hello Kitty’s Celebration @ City Square Mall (15 – 23 Mar 2014) (Invite)

This character needs no introduction; she’s the world’s most famous kitty, and she’s spun an industry worth gazillions of billions of dollars loved by fans young and old alike. That’s right, I’m talking about Hello Kitty, the mouthless feline star who has taken over City Square Mall with the latest Hello Kitty Celebrations (more on that later).

Young ones and grownups who are young at heart are in for a treat this March school holiday. Spend a minimum of $50 and get your paws on a Meet & Greet Pass to take a picture with Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel (see below!). In addition, every $50 spent gets you and three family members a potential golden ticket to a 7D6N trip to Japan, with a visit to Sanrio Puroland, the mecca of all things kawaii (limited to 20 entries per shopper per day regardless of amount spent).

On top of that, City Square Mall is also rewarding shoppers with a $5 City Square shopping voucher for every $200 spent ($250 if inclusive of NTUC FairPrice receipts). So hey, how’s that for participating in Singapore’s favourite pastime? 😛

Lola’s Cafe @ Kovan

Tucked away in a discreet corner off the beaten track from Kovan MRT Station, Lola’s Cafe appears little more than one of those run-of-the-mill coffee-and-cake joints that have been springing up all over Singapore as of late. Its nondescript exterior bears a simple sign embellished with its name, and from afar, gave me the impression of housing a dusty bookstore that had been left behind in this ever-speedy age of technology.

But looks can be deceiving. 😉

Walking past the glass doors that separated Lola’s interior from the hustle and bustle of its neighbouring housing estates, I found myself immersed in what can only be described as a perfect blend of coziness and that hard-to-find promise of good things to come. I was there to meet up with an old friend from primary school, and what better place to catch up than in this welcoming abode of Lola’s? 😉
