[CLOSED] Bakerzin @ Vivocity

Update 20 Jan 2025: Bakerzin has closed.

When it comes to pasta, I’m not one to go big on fancy schmancy restaurants.

Raised on my family’s frugal philosophy, I grew up with the mentality that I shouldn’t have to pay good money for whatever I can nail in my own kitchen… which explains why I still head over to McDonald’s for my Hot Cake fix 😛 (but that’s a story for another day).

So when my friend suggested lunch at Bakerzin in VivoCity, I couldn’t help but feel a little skeptical.

Don’t get me wrong; I was a fan when they first opened their doors in Tampines 1, but since then, their menu has seen so many changes that I hardly know what to expect (pretty much like every girl who’s seen the love of her life morph into a douche over time). That, coupled with a few not-so-pleasant dining experiences, put it waaaay below on my list of to-dine places in the West.

But as they say, everyone deserves a second chance, and restaurants are no exception. So, I thought, why the hell not? 😀

Lola’s Cafe @ Kovan

Tucked away in a discreet corner off the beaten track from Kovan MRT Station, Lola’s Cafe appears little more than one of those run-of-the-mill coffee-and-cake joints that have been springing up all over Singapore as of late. Its nondescript exterior bears a simple sign embellished with its name, and from afar, gave me the impression of housing a dusty bookstore that had been left behind in this ever-speedy age of technology.

But looks can be deceiving. 😉

Walking past the glass doors that separated Lola’s interior from the hustle and bustle of its neighbouring housing estates, I found myself immersed in what can only be described as a perfect blend of coziness and that hard-to-find promise of good things to come. I was there to meet up with an old friend from primary school, and what better place to catch up than in this welcoming abode of Lola’s? 😉

New Menu Launch @ Domino’s Pizza (OMY Blog Club)

Pizza toppings are very much like a girl’s accessories – put too little on, and you’ll fail to stand out from the crowd. Put too much, and you’ll come off looking like a Christmas tree gone wrong; trying to come up with the perfect pizza topping is, as you’d guess, is no mean feat.

So I was pretty impressed to hear that Domino’s Pizza had rolled out not one, not two, but a whopping eight new pizza toppings on top of their already extensive menu. And thanks to the OMY Blog Clubyours truly got an invite to try them out! C:

Nandos @ Plaza Singapura

There are many ways to find out whether your grub is truly as good as they say it is. From simple taste tests to elaborate searches for online reviews, the list is endless. Heck, you can even pit it against a famous Michelin star chef if you’re feeling really confident.

To me, the ultimate testament to good food is whether you can still savour it when you’re sick – or down with a stuffy nose, to be precise.

Hear me out here; I know we all have our good ol’ comfort food to soothe our troubled selves when we’re down, but what’s a girl to do when she has a date to keep? Without that oh so important sense of smell, what else is left to enhance the flavour of our food? Nothing much.

So when I stepped into Nandos at Plaza Singapura a couple of nights back, I knew their signature Portugese grilled chicken was in for a real test against the tastelessness that had long overtaken my taste buds. Even the decor and menu which practically screamed “Spicy!” did little to convince me otherwise.

Turns out, I was so wrong.

Tanjong Beach Club @ Sentosa

Navigating one’s way around Singapore can be a tricky affair at times, especially with her ever changing infrastructure, and not forgetting – and this is my greatest pet peeve – the ever so strange way we name our places and buildings. Like how some places are named after a district that they’re not even located in.

Heck, there’s a certain Pasir Ris Secondary School right smack in my neighbourhood, and I sure as hell am not living in Pasir Ris!

Luckily, Tanjong Beach Club (TBC) is nowhere near committing this cardinal sin; its name is as straightforward as its location: right in Tanjong Beach at Sentosa! Though some might easily confuse it with Tanjong Pagar,  going by evidence in hash tags on Instagram.

Arriving at its pristine white entrance with a couple of colleagues one sunny Saturday afternoon, who would’ve guessed that we would be stepping into a tropical oasis with a 1950s beach resort concept:

Pasta in a Jar

If there’s one thing I love about jars, it’s the fact that you can make anything and everything with them; bouquets, lanterns, even classy storage cum display spaces for little knick knacks. Just thinking about these ideas gets me all excited. 😀

And not forgetting the ever-growing food trend: meals in a jar!

I’ve always been inspired by Grin Affair’s style of serving their cakes in cute little jars, but since my culinary skills are not good enough for the baking world (yet), I decided to try something similar with some pasta I’d whipped up.

I’m pretty excited about this meal in a jar deal ‘cos I’ve never done anything like this before! 😀

[CLOSED] Humble Origins Cafe @ NUS

Update 20 Jan 2025: Humble Origins has closed.

Humble-Origins

Happiness is a scoop of vanilla ice cream; all other things are secondary.

If you’ve been hanging around LT 11 and 12 at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (NUS), you’d probably have noticed a quiet and cozy cafe run by cap-donning baristas- that’s right,  I’m talking about Humble Origins Cafe which opened in August last year.

Drawn in by its relaxed atmosphere and soothing music, I’ve been frequenting Humble Origins for its drinks in between classes, but I never tried its array of baked goods that practically beg to be eaten whenever I head to the counter for a Root Beer Float or Coffee with Ice Cream.

Well, this week I finally gave in to temptation and succumbed to not one, but three of the “new” items on the menu! Oh, the joys of indulgence
