While Singapore is certainly no stranger to lobster rolls by now, it can be challenging to find a decent lobster roll without burning the wallet. Enter Lobsters & Ice Cream, an American food kiosk sandwiched between two bustling Chinese eateries on New Bridge Road in Chinatown.
This newly opened kiosk specialises in East Coast inspired lobster rolls with four types of sauces: Maine, SG Chilli Crab, Mentaiko, and Uni. Crab rolls are also on the menu, and you can opt for a Seafood Roll ($23) to enjoy the best of both worlds.
The Premium Lobster Roll ($15 for half, $23 for full) is the most popular choice, with its chunky claw meat layered enticingly over smaller tail pieces in a buttered brioche roll. The meat is satisfyingly tender, with a sweetness that speaks volume about its freshness.
The mentaiko sauce (+$2) that the claw meat was slathered in also added an umami punch to the sweet flesh, and the extra bursts of flavour from the tobiko left me wanting more.
It was almost a pity to move on to the Crab Roll ($10 for half, $18 for full) after that treat, but what it lacks in appearance, it makes up for with taste. Stuffed with shredded crab meat, the crab rolls is reminiscent of our ever classic chilli crab. Paired with the SG Chilli Crab Sauce, this was a match made in heaven for my tastebuds. It has a pretty consistent texture, too.
I was pretty surprised by the Matcha and Milk Tea Soft Serve ($5), which was satisfyingly sweet and not too overpowering. For a moment, I was so busy savouring the soft serve that I forgot I was at a lobster roll shop. A perfect treat to end the meal indeed.
Lobsters & Ice Cream certainly lives up to its name. While the food and service from the owner are promising, it could definitely benefit a larger space to accommodate the lunch and dinner crowds. It was a tad hard to spot the kiosk amidst the boisterous bustle from the neighbouring Chinese restaurants, and I do hope it finds a setting that does justice to its delicious food!
