Opened by ex-Saveur owner Dylan, The Masses has always been on my radar, but for some reason I kept putting off visiting. With circuit breaker measures leaving me wanting for more variety in my lunch options, I decided to #treatmyself and try their selection of French cuisine with Asian influences!

Situated in rustic Shaw Towers on Beach Road, The Masses is committed to serving restaurant quality food at affordable prices.

Saveur regulars will recognise one its most popular dishes in the C&C&C&C Pasta ($19.90+), which presents a whole mouthful both in name and flavours. Standing for its luxurious ingredients of caviar, chorizo crumble, crabmeat, and confit lemon with lobster sauce, the C&C&C&C Pasta blends different elements and flavours around a general swirl of al dente angel hair pasta.

The freshness is notable in each component, especially the chunks of chilled crab meat. Served chilled, the C&C&C&C Pasta is a gastronomic delight down to the last mouthful. A couple of scoopfuls of Sea Urchin ($7+ for 7g) completes this dish.

I’m not a fan of western carrot cakes (having grown up on the savoury, oily mess from hawker centers around the neighbourhood, but the Mimolette Cheese Carrot Cake ($9+) absolutely won me over. Looking a little dense at first, this chef’s specialty combines intense flavours of savoury and sweet in two separate layers, with the cheese shavings adding a bonus touch of umami to this dessert

Normally, I find carrot cakes to be too dry or thick for my liking, but The Masses’ rendition passes with flying colours for me, with its “cake” layer proving not overwhelmingly sweet, and oh so moist.

One burning question the circuit breaker has raised for me is, can restaurants, cafes, and eateries still deliver gastronomic experiences to remember, without the help of fancy plating, hip decorations, and a bustling atmosphere? The Masses pretty much nails it for me!
