You know you’re at a authentic Italian restaurant when your pizzas are baked in a wood-fired oven, and the words “Haiwaiian” and “pineapple” are nowhere to be found on the menu. Situated along Hong Kong Street, a stone’s throw away from Clarke Quay MRT Station, is Amò, a cozy Italian outfit that prides itself on its “labour of love and craftsmanship”.
With a menu focusing on antipasti, classic and signature pizzas, and pastas of the homemade and artisanal variety, Amò blends traditional recipes with modern techniques.
The Stracciatella, Prosciutto, Rucola and Fig Vincotto $34.25) combines the tartness of the base, with the rich flavours of the prosciutto wrapped stracciatella. Overall, the combination is not too rich, and satisfyingly tasty. The slightly punchy notes of the prosciutto are what make this pizza stand out – and look at that vibrant colour! Makes me want to dig in immediately.
Vegetarians and “fun guys” (ha ha) can indulge in the Mushrooms, Truffle, Mascarpone and Tuscan Pecorino ($37.45). Slightly richer in taste, this pizza emits a notable truffle aroma as soon as the cover is lifted. While the mushrooms are generously portioned and baked to perfection, it’s the base that stands out for me. Creamy, rich, and earthy.
The winning factor in Amò’s pizzas are its crusts – airy and not overly dense even after a considerable journey from Clarke Quay to the east side of Singapore! Best eaten piping hot.
