A certain striped mascot comes to mind whenever someone mentions “locally-brewed beer”. But did you know that Singapore is also home to other microbreweries? Thirty Six Brewlab & Smokehouse boasts an in-house brewery with 23 different taps to satiate cravings for midday or evening pints in its spacious premises in Telok Ayer.
The microbrewery’s location along a slip road makes it ideal for enjoying a cold one a stone’s throw away from the bustling center of Club Street. The interior is spacious, with enough seating to accommodate several large groups on a busy night. It was notably empty during the afternoon when I visited, and the chill vibes that permeated the space made for a laidback respite from the heat.
The menu is filled with hearty bites and sharing plates crafted to pair with their in-house brews. Think bar food with hearty flavours in even heartier portions. The Trio of Beef Empanadas ($16++) is deliciously spicy, with a beef-forward flavour that explodes beneath the empanadas’ crispy skin.

The Scotch Egg ($14++) is a happy inclusion for bar hoppers seeking alternatives to the popcorn chicken and fried fish skins that most bar menus seem to lean on in Singapore. It’s worth the 15 minutes wait to cut into toothsome layers of Impossible meat with nduja, regular sausage, and perfectly molten egg. Definitely don’t skimp out on ordering at least one of these! It’s not the cheapest appetiser on the menu but, certainly worth trying.

The hallmark of a good pub menu is a classic plate of Fish and Chips ($32++) which Thirty Six nails to a tee. The halibut with Lion Brewery Straits Pale Ale beer batter is buttery and flaky, and the fries crisp. The only complaints I had about this dish was the beer batter could be slightly stronger, and the mushy peas could do with less of a citrusy note.
