It’s been a while since I last cafe hopped around the west side of Singapore, and chancing upon a couple of Instagram stories about Yeast Side piqued my interest.
Cafe by day and craft beer joint by night, it prides itself on its homemade sourdough toast and other baked goods, with delectable pizzas available from 4pm onwards.
Traveling to its two-storey premises at KAP Residences in King Albert Park took a while for this Eastie. I was thankful to step into air-conditioned comfort after placing my order at the ground level. The alfresco area would be great for taking in the bustle of the nearby road under more… forgiving weather, but you can also retreat to the upper level where a floor-to-ceiling window makes it possible to people-watch.
I’m a sucker for photogenic food and seeing the Grilled Cheese Toastie with Tomato Dip ($16++) on a friend’s Instagram was actually what drew me to check out Yeast Side. But, the cheese wasn’t as melted as I expected, and the blend of gruyere, Red Leicester, and mozzarella remained stubbornly intact with the sourdough bread. Looking around at the other table that ordered the same dish, it looked like all the toasties of the day were suffering a similar case of underwhelmingness.
Perhaps I caught them on a bad day. But, the tomato tip itself tasted quite refreshing and added some zest to the bread and cheese. The sourdough toast itself was pretty tasty, with a light sponginess that somewhat redeemed the dish for me. I imagine it would have hit the home run if the cheese was significantly more melted and gooey!

Determined to make the most of my visit and not let my hour and half long commute go to waste, I tried the Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Brownie ($5++) next. The dessert was not too dry, with the rich dark chocolate yielding little specks of saltiness here and there. It might not have been the best brownie I’ve had, but it was decent nonetheless.

I’m not a huge coffee fan, but the Cold Brew ($5.50++) was pretty refreshing with just the right amount of acidity. With the current scorching temperatures, this concoction is heaven-sent.

While my visit could have done with some improvements, it wasn’t bad overall and I do have to credit Yeast Side for its generous brunch portions. It does live up to its motto of being the “best side” of bread-making. I’d gladly give it another go if I’m ever in the area again.
