French Fold @ Telok Ayer, Tanjong Pagar – Elegant Crepes and Galettes in CBD

French cuisine often gets a rep – for better or for worse – as food that is geared for the high class or occasions with a little frou-frou. But, that’s not to say that you can’t find French food that’s wallet-friendly, yet substantiative. French Fold is one such place where you can satisfy cravings for authentic crepes and galettes.

Opened by the same company behind Merci Marcel, French Fold is one of the newer additions to Telok Ayer, having taken over the space previously occupied by Mojo. The rustic-meets-tropical paradise interior lends a laid-back vibe to the space that is reminiscent of its neighbourhood.

For those in need of a quick introduction – a galette is quite literally, a French fold where buckwheat flour is folded into quarters and stuffed with savoury fillings. A crepe is a thin package typically consumed as a dessert.

The menu is distinctly straightforward, with various combinations of cheese, meats, and other goodies for the taking. There are even Asian-inspired flavours like No. 11 – Satay Chicken, Ginger, Peanuts, and No. 12 Masala Chicken, Chilli, Tomatoes, French Cheese, Peanuts, to tickle your fancy for the quirky.

Prices range from $8 – $22, not too pricey considering its location. The No. 5 – Chorizo, Organic Egg Sunny Side Up, Comte Cheese ($15++) carries intense umami notes from the chorizo. It’s not too rich either, and the runny egg yolk blends rather nicely with the comte cheese. The buckwheat adds a unique crispiness to the galette’s texture so it’s not overly filling.

The No. 20 – Brown Sugar, Butter from Maison Beillevaire ($7++) is proof you don’t need fancy toppings to make a mind-blowing dessert. The popping sweetness of the brown sugar contrasts nicely with the lemon butter’s savoury and citrusy notes, making for a flavour explosion that elevates the otherwise plain wheat flour. Go for this if you’re craving some post-meal sweets without the dreaded dessert-induced bloatedness!

I’m in love with how unassuming French Fold is, from the food to the atmosphere. It’ll be exciting to see what other creations this French cafe cooks up next!
