Shifting locations, especially to a bigger one, is a good sign of a business growing. And Cake Spade has certainly come a long way since its first opening at Orchid Hotel almost a decade ago. Time really flies!
The homegrown brand helmed by At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy alumnus Zenn Ng has expanded once more to a two-level shophouse on South Bridge Road opposite Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. While no longer located within the vicinity of Tanjong Pagar, the cafe still sports its baby pink exterior and feminine interior, no doubt inspired by luxury fashion brand, Kate Spade.
The decor is hip and trendy, and you can spot a wall of posters detailing various items and ongoing discounts. There’s even a small nook where you sit and people-watch from a window. Both levels of the cafe were bustling and filled with people and conversation when I visited on a late Saturday afternoon.
Cake Spade first gained attention for its tofu cheesecake and cake shakes, and the trend of the hour is the Comic Cake ($9.80++), a Chantilly cream cake with mango and strawberries that also sports chocolate icing drawn in a way to make each slice appear 3D. Talk about attention to details!
Visual quirks aside, the Comic Cake is one of the sweetest and creamy cakes I’ve tried. The sponge is light and moist while the cream adds a certain thickness and richness. I love how fresh the fruits taste as well! Overall, a really sweet treat that ticks all the boxes of what an indulgent cake for afternoon tea time should be. Price is a tad on the steep side for a slice of cake though.

While the cake shakes are regrettably a thing of the past, the iced teas are still worth checking out. Especially if you’re not a coffee drinker. The Apple & Honey Iced Tea ($7.90++) is both aesthetically pleasing and refreshing, with a perfect balance of sweet and tart. Loved the extra crunch from the pomegranate seeds!

Treats are aplenty at Cake Spade. You can even order customised cakelettes in advance.

Vanilla Butter Sugar Cookie ($5.50++)
I highly recommend Cake Spade if you’re a cake lover who is looking for a treat that both looks and tastes good. The bakers here are constantly innovating new desserts with interesting flavour profiles that are worth a try.
