Gyosen @ Fortune Centre, Middle Road – Hole-In-The-Wall Japanese Donburi and Omakase

While Fortune Centre has established itself as a foodie haven for vegetarians and vegans, that has not stopped a handful of Japanese and Korean eateries from setting up shop in this unassuming mall. Gyosen has quietly made a name for itself with its affordable Japanese rice bowls and omaksase which are housed in two adjacent units on the third level.

Update March 2023: Following a successful soft launch, Gyosen has updated its pricing – 8-Course Omakase ($188++), 10-Course Omakase ($288++), Premium Omakase ($388++), Chirashi Don ($28.90++), Premium Chirashi Don ($68++). Truffle Edamame ($10++).

The 10-Course Premium Omakase ($168++) offers you front-row seats to the cooking action at Gyosen, while the dine-in area allows for more casual and wallet-friendly gatherings. With its relatively secluded location and reasonably-priced food, Gyosen has been described by Japanese foodies as somewhat of a hidden gem.

Sashimi Rice Bowl sets you back about $18.90++ to $25.90++, depending on whether you go for the regular or Gyosen premium version. The cuts of salmon, maguro, amber jack, seabream, and tuna belly are undeniably delicious and clean-tasting, and the unagi and hotate yield sweet afternotes that hint at its freshness. With uni and ikura added to the mix, it’s a steal for its price.

The rice is a pleasant surprise as well, as it’s mildly flavoured as opposed to most other rice bowls that favour plain Japanese rice.

If you’re not up for the full-fledged omakase experience, you can still indulge in a variety of appetisers and platters fit for sharing. The Truffle Edamame ($6++) is one of the more lower-priced appetisers with an intense aroma that is best complimented by Gyosen’s free-flow Japanese green tea.

Gyosen’s unfurnished charm is proof you don’t need the pomp and circumstance to deliver a solid dining experience. I’ll be back to check out the other rice bowls for sure if I’m in the area!
